Ryan S August 17, 2012 August 17, 2012 Ryan, can you take PAR readings? see post #15 in this thread for PAR readings.
Fishie August 27, 2012 Author August 27, 2012 (edited) I upgraded one of the lens today....noticed that if u touch the lens ...it is much hotter than the previous lens...I guess it's focussed more ...thers also no more reflective lens ...the old silver metallic kind ..all replaced It's also noticeably brighter ...I ended up scaling back and reducing intensity Edited August 27, 2012 by Fishie

Fishie August 28, 2012 Author August 28, 2012 pix as promised left is with tir ...right without... the lights are at around 30-40% intensity...
DaveS August 28, 2012 August 28, 2012 Regular radion lens on left, tir lens on right. First photo is low intensity, second photo is high intensity. I think these pictures are very useful! Looking at the bottom one, clearly the spread is wider. But looking at the top one, you can see that in addition to the spread being wider, you are gaining a significant spot in the middle between the 2 "pucks" with the new lens. You can also see that the new lens provides for a slightly smaller hot spot under each puck. So it would appear that the laws of physics still hold, even for the Radions and that this greater coverage is gained by dispersing the light more evenly. One thing to keep in mind is that each puck on the fixture has many individual LEDs. Therefore you shouldn't think of it as a flashlight that is being focused or spread but as many individual LEDs which can focused or spread as well as directed elsewhere, similar to what Viktoriia was saying. IMHO the spread with the new lens make for a much better fixture.
Ryan S August 28, 2012 August 28, 2012 IMHO the spread with the new lens make for a much better fixture. Totally agree. Fishie - are you glad you did the upgrade? Well worth the $30 right? I told Viktoriia they should do it as well. But remember to turn the intensity down for a while to avoid bleaching.

steveoutlaw August 28, 2012 August 28, 2012 All that money for radions......and then you have to pay more just to get what MH already has!!

hypertech August 28, 2012 August 28, 2012 If all it does is redirect previously wasted light, then IMHO it seems like it should be a standard part of the light. I'd be a little annoyed if I spent all that money on the light and then got hit for another $30 to make it perform as it should. I see that case as different than if it is just changing the shape and some people might want it and some might not. Then it makes sense to sell it seperate. But, from teh pictures posted above, it doesn't seem like there is any reason not to have it and in that case it feels like it should be included and not an upsell to an already expensive light.
Ryan S August 28, 2012 August 28, 2012 well the way ecotech is selling it is as an optional upgrade. many folks with shallow tanks wouldn't need the new lens. they are already running the stock radions at 40% intensity, so adding these lenses and running them at 20% intensity wouldn't really make sense. but imo, for anyone with a tank thats 20"+ tall, it's worth the $30.

I agree with Hypertech. The spread is better and addresses a flaw in the previous fixture design. I can't see a reason why people wouldn't want the new lens. Sure for deeper tanks you want the greater penetration that the old lens provides but why would you want a fixture with two bright spots and a dim area in the middle? You could just put two light cannons next to each other.

Maybe it was designed the way it was intended originally. maybe this upgrade lens is a brand new idea that their engineer just thought of, happens all the time with other products. cant really give away new ideas for free, well, maybe, but I wouldnt call it "standard part of the light"...it's not like the original had defects or bugs or something... I can see selling an newly developed upgrade to previous purchasers. But, I don't think they are including it on new purchases either. So, if you were to walk into a store today, you would need to buy the light and the lens.
