Fishie July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 ive heard that regal's are hard to keep and the vast majority die because they are fussy eaters. is this true for the species in general or is it because they are caught by poisoning and other poor methods in parts where they are caught i also read that ones caught in the maldives are usually fine...does that mean they are not fussy eaters... just tryin gto gauge if its the species or region that dictates survivability and adaptation the reef tank
Jan July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 Yellow belly Regal angels caught from the Red Sea have a high survival rate because they are caught without cyanide. When available they are pricey. It's the gray belly regals caught in Indonesia that do not do well. They are often caught using cyanide and will only last for about about one or two months. They shut down and starve as a side effect of the cyanide poisoning. Liveaquaria assures me that their gray belly Regals from Indonesia are not caught using cyanide. But do they have people actually watching how these fish are caught? Since it takes the fish a couple of months to die any guarantee expires. A regal on Divers Den might be the way to go. those are supposed to be the elite of the elite fish in all respects; color, appetite, etc. When you buy one from a LFS you want to make sure it is eating and that they've had it in their system for a while. I don't know of anyone that will do this. Your other option is to look for the yellow belly Regal from the Red Sea and pay a hefty price.
Fishie July 6, 2012 Author July 6, 2012 (edited) thanks for info...don't want to support a market where cyanide poisoning is enouraged...ill leave this species be ..and go for with a wallpaper =D Edited July 6, 2012 by Fishie
trockafella July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 Also they can be coral nippers, so if youre planning to keep a mixed reef its not a great choice, tough some people have had success with them in a reef.. Lots of other really cool fish out there.. Btw, glad to see your sticking with it..
Jan July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 +1. Mine was doing great for months and then it started to nip at my open brain corals. I had a yellow belly. Gorgeous fish! It's in a great home. Jan July 6, 2012 July 6, 2012 I'll be making more food in the next two weeks. After the bulb GB. I'll post it. If you really want one just look for the yellow belly ones. Not easy to come by, but they do pop up every now and again. Be ready to pay for it, though. i saw urs Jan when i came over for the food...which reminds me i will need to replenish my stock soon of ur awesome food..the coral loved ur food too...they would open up and swing around with all arms but yea thats when i was like ..."i want that fish"! davelin315 July 7, 2012 July 7, 2012 Wrote an article in an older WAMAS Waves about them. They are tough, but it can be done if you're careful and methodical in your approach. Get them from a reputable source (our vendors here get in high quality specimens) and you can be very successful in converting them to captive life.
