Mike Mann May 28, 2012 May 28, 2012 so my po4 was real high last week when i tested so i bought a bigger BRS reactor with there good GFO. its been running for 5 days now and its down to 0.5 from 1.0 where it was. What i want to know is if it takes this long to drop, or if i have some other problem. i tested for everything because i noticed that some cheato was disappearing and looked to be dieing. everything else in the tank looks great except my HUGE bright yellow polyp rock! they havent opened in days.
scott711 May 29, 2012 May 29, 2012 what was it before you tested when you said it was "real high? You don't want to lower it too fast. The corals need time to acclimate to less po4 in the water.
Mike Mann May 29, 2012 Author May 29, 2012 it was 1.0+ when i first tested it. thats what i ment by real high. now its .5 steady its been at this number for two days now
zygote2k May 30, 2012 May 30, 2012 what's the p04 of the incoming water? how about after your r/o? are you an over-feeder? do you use frozen food?

Mike Mann May 30, 2012 Author May 30, 2012 well i never have tested incoming water so i guess i need to try that coming out of the R/O. i do tend to over feed and it is frozen food. its rods food. but the tank is fallow right now and im 32 days in and i havent been feeding the tank anything.
Mike Mann May 30, 2012 Author May 30, 2012 i have read before that if your running GFO do not use cheato is this true? because my cheato is surely dieing off now.
jaddc May 30, 2012 May 30, 2012 You can use chaeto plus gfo. You need to change the gfo often if your levels are high. Once you get the value low, then you can change the gfo less frequently.
astroboy May 30, 2012 May 30, 2012 i have read before that if your running GFO do not use cheato is this true? because my cheato is surely dieing off now. I've run chaeto and GFO for the past nine months, no problem. I suppose it's possible that GFO could lower phosphates to the point where the cheato can't live... It couldn't do much harm to turn the GFO off for a couple of weeks and see what happens. Every tank is different...
scott711 May 30, 2012 May 30, 2012 If your tank is empty you shouldn't have any PO4 issues. If you do, do a few water changes. Your chaeto won't do well with out a nutrient source. I run GFO, macro algae and vinegar to keep my phosphates in check
