Anybody run a mesh mod. on their needle wheel skimmers? Does it really make a difference?

I may work for a little while, but eventually it tears up the impeller (and sometimes the pump) because it wears out and gets and uneven weight distribution. Does anyone make a pinwheel impeller for your pump?

It's a stock pump that comes with the Marineland 300 skimmer.

I have a meshmodded Octopus skimmer. I bought it used and it has run for 9 months since I've had it. They seem to be more sensitive to start/stop issues, so it's a good idea to clean it more often than you would normally clean a pump. 6 months or so does the trick for me.

I clean mine about every 2 months. I was just afraid it would come apart and tear up everything like Steveoutlaw said.

Always done wonders for me, just keep some extra mesh on hand

I saw one kit on line, do you secure with fishing line or zip ties?

I never had any problems with the impeller (even years later).

Here is a thread about my experience:

Great mod, well worth it. As you can see from my thread, the pinwheel was total junk.

small zip ties here as well, i have some extra enkamat too i cant remember who asked for it last time

but ive been running it for about 4 years on my ASM G3 wtih no problems, had to replace the mesh once. also have a pinwheel one and its amazing how much better the enkamat worked
