I am thinking out my next tank, and will be incorporating a sump. Main display estimated at 120gal with 40breeder as sump.

Let me know what you think, and feel free to add some of your designs to make this thread useful. I created my design in excel, which is my program of choice for everything... (not to scale)

Sump for 120.pdf

Thanks,

Mike

new tank soon mike.?

If soon is less than 2 years... Need to get out of this 3rd floor condo. The wife said she can only take another year of condo living, so I figure the house will be purchased sooner rather than later.

I hate the idea of buying pieces as I go. I plan on gathering EVERYTHING before I begin anything this time around.

Anyways... thoughts on the design?

3rd floor, go for it. i have a 70gal on the 3rd floor. hasnt fallin into the neighbors apt yet.. the only problem with picking up pieces as you go is that your plans are definitely going to change over that much time. now grabbing a vortech at a great price or something like that is fine.

This is the mirror of my sump. But what if you moved the pump to the far left? Skimmer overflows the to fuge which overflows to the return? Lets you get rid of the Tee. Also lets any bubbles that get through the bubble trap to get trapped by the macro.

After the recommendation from Zygote, I removed the small pump from the fuge. It really served no purpose.

Good effort.

i second the use of a drain into the fuge. you get free flow into the fuge..less energy used by your return pump (aka more flow in tank so not technically less energy but) or you can T the return off for any reactors

I have the same set up in my tank now (cept the fuge has its own feed from my frag tank), Ive heard the fuge will do better getting water directly from the tank with nutrients rather than cleaned water from the skimmer only but i dont think it would really matter that much.

Also have heard the Avast skimmer like about 6-8 inches of depth so keep that in mind for the skimmer part, right now i have my ASM alot deeper than that but will be switching to the avast i have ready to go soon. Also talked with justin and the CS-1 is able to be modded to become a recirc without increasing the foot print (which would handle the water leve much better) for VERY cheap so im thinking about going that route.

Yea, good point on putting the fuge in the middle. I like that. I could T the return for a couple reactors if I wanted.

my sump is like that, but it has a drain going to the fuge and one to the skimmer compartment.

I want to control the drain with the gate valve to get the full siphon, and run the beananimal design overflow. Not sure how splitting the drain would affect this? I figure keep it simple as possible. One main drain with gate valve to "tune."

Falling is worst case scenerio. I would be much more worried of LEAKING into their apartment.

I had thought about skimmer, fuge, return, but that meant that the fuge section is only as deep as the skimmer section (unless you raise the skimmer). I wanted rock rubble in the bottom half of my fuge. Just something to think about.

Also I don't think that filter sock will do much the way it is. I think you will need to raise the opening above the water level :)

My fuge is the same setup but with the fuge much deeper, but that was to get more depth (thus volume) as I have the width of it at only about 6 inches. If you put the fuge in the middle it will be lower, but make it as long (in direction of water flow) as you can.

Remember that by having the fuge water sourced from the T off the return you can control the flow through this chamber. When in the middle, it will get the full flow of the water cycling through the sump.

In the baffle section I made the first section a bit wider and put an egg crate shelf in there. This way if I want to put a bag of media or frag plugs I just lay it on top. make sure the last baffle going into the return section is a bit lower than the first baffle from the skimmer section. This will ensure good flow.

Good points, and the sock beneath water level was not meant on purpose. I realize it should flow into the sock...

Thanks

maybe run the union off the return pump above water level...less effort when needing to remove it...

I bought a 4x1" manifold from flexpvc.com. Had to alter the heights of the pipes going in to the mani...there is not enough room for all four fittings otherwise.

Very good point.
