jason the filter freak June 2, 2011 Author Share June 2, 2011 So I've done the live rock, added the extra bulb, put on a fuge bulb/led array, as well as added cheato to the center chamber, I'm going to add a DJ switch panel with an automatic timer for lights, I'm going to make sure the return doesn't jam any more, then I think I'm done. jason the filter freak June 16, 2011 Author Share June 16, 2011 So there is now a blue spotted watchman goby, sexy shrimp, candy cane pistol shrimp (smaller than the sexy shrimp ) and a few more corals... AND THIS!! I was lucky enough to have the oppertunity to beta test a reactor from the boys down at Avast Marine Works! And this thing is SICK! First I tried granulated carbon, definitely too small and went right though the flow plates, thats ok, carbon will be run passively in a mesh bag... you'll see my application for the reactor at the end. It fits perfectly in the last chamber of a 14 gallon biocube, now thats small! Leaving the first chamber open for a heater, and the middle for a refugium. In its final version I understand it will be made to run internal or external (freaking cool!) and will have some sort of awesome mounting bracket. jason the filter freak June 16, 2011 Author Share June 16, 2011 With tubing in place, I could have easily added another pump to run the reactor but in order to keep heat and power consumption down I chose to run it with the return pump. jason the filter freak June 16, 2011 Author Share June 16, 2011 So since this tank has no skimmer, though the blue poly filter seen at the top of the second chamber does a decent job, I wanted something else to help keep down nutrient levels so... BIO PELLETS, which I will be running on my bigger tank too, and I could get them from avastmarine.com makes everything simple. Seriously look how small and awesome this thing is! With a maxijet 900 there was really good tumble for the bio pellets and there was still enough flow to turn the hydor rotating deflector. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

jason the filter freak June 18, 2011 Author Share June 18, 2011 So I didn't externally inoculate the bio-pellets with bacteria, so the reactor is cycling today, it wasn't there at midnight but cloudiness is definitely there at 10 am. jason the filter freak June 19, 2011 Author Share June 19, 2011 Added a brig red mushroom, and more importantly I pulled up the screen in the middle chamber and added live rock rubble underneath, I still haven't noticed a pod population but I only added around 10 to start with, I guess its time to pick up some pod ladened cheato from some one. More importantly taking over 2 hours to do due to very limited space and awkward working condition I installed a power strip and a 8 socket switch panel, but for the upcoming owner of the tank I think it will be a welcome addation. Orange digi that got nuked to almost nothing when the bta walked, coming back strong. I opted to put it internal to my center chamber rather than mount it external for space reasons. I chopped the sensor tube a little bit (a little bit too much, it was a bad idea, but it still works awesome. The only mod I made was to cover the small hole in the magnet that was supposed to be external to prevent water from getting in and rusting the magnet, just a dab of super glue. jason the filter freak July 12, 2011 Author Share July 12, 2011 This thing is AWESOME, the magnet mount gives it tons and tons of flexibility where to mount it. Everything fits snug with out much difficulty. Love it! On the left in the center chamber (I drilled a small hole though that wall so I could feed the sensor line and still drop in the mechanical filtration pad. Filter pad in place The filter pad gets rotated once a week and replaced ever two weeks. The black probe holder is meant to hold a piece of Air hose for ATO purposes, but since the chamber fills all the way up and there is a back siphon risk IMO I opted to zip tie it to the cord for the return pump to keep it above water level at all time.
