Incredible Corals October 15, 2010 October 15, 2010 I've had all the same SPS in my new and old tanks. The old tank had a 6 bulb T5 and the new one is powered by 96 LEDs. All my SPS is responding amazingly. I have some SPS that didn't grow at all under my T5, or at least a rate that I couldn't notice. Now, every time I look at my tank I see new growth left and right. I'm very excited and wanted to share a pic of my Acro that is going nuts. Look at all the long white tips. This coral never had white tips under the T5s!
ctenophore October 15, 2010 October 15, 2010 I'll second this. I installed the DIY kit that was built at the frag fest over my son's 29 gal tank which is mostly sps. It used to have a 175w MH then some T5s, but temp was always an issue and coral growth was never great. Could be because the MH bulb was 3 years old. When the LEDs went on, the corals just completely turned around and are looking great. I'll get some pics of this little tank soon once it grows in just a little more.
Incredible Corals October 15, 2010 Author October 15, 2010 cool..are you using 50/50 CW:RB ratio? Yes 48 white and 48 blue. Interested to see a pic in two weeks to compare to. I'll make sure to take a pic and see what it looks like.
BowieReefer84 October 15, 2010 October 15, 2010 Very nice! You should measure the PAR. I am interested in what it comes out to be. I think those fixtures use 1 watt LED's right? If you had 96 3 watt LED's I would think that would be toooo much. I saw two of those fixtures over a tank at that pet place, and the color is awesome. I think your photo represents it very well.

I would love it if someone had a PAR meter and wanted to come over to check the tank out. I havn't really had too many people come see it so I would love to show it off.
Kingumar October 15, 2010 October 15, 2010 how much did this fixture cost you? is it a DIY? WHat size tank is it? If i plan to go led on my 90 in the future, how many bulbs am i looking at? finally, how much do you think it would be?

A quick dirty estimate on 96 LEDs LED ~ $ 580 + Heatsink ~ $100 drivers assuming he is running 12 LEDs per string per driver with meanwell $ 256 ++ shipping wires, solder, flux, thermal pads or screw+ nyloc washers $30 housing varies if you have something to gut or built a new one ..$20-$100? optics if he use those...$100 I would say around $1k-$1.4k...but if he use SteveLED or some Chinese made royal blue leds...reduced the cost by ~$144.... I have the 23.5" panorama fixture, added 2 modular 453nm strips and 1 stunner strip w/ reflector. Cost around $1050 for everything. I did find various coupon codes online to save more and found websites with special discounts to save about $100-$150.
thewire October 16, 2010 October 16, 2010 I am wondering what's the penetration on those 1W LED. Would to see par value

zygote2k October 16, 2010 October 16, 2010 I too have had great success using LED on the 6 tanks that have been switched over from mh or T5. The corals respond favorably with visible growth in short periods of time compared to the other light sources.
