Quantum Aquaria April 12, 2010 April 12, 2010 Just got these in the mail. I ordered 2 of them. http://cgi.ebay.com/42-24-LED-Waterproof-Coral-Aquarium-moonlight-lighting_W0QQitemZ310212522087QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item483a1b7067 A bit hesitant since it's from an unknown vendor on ebay but they actually look very nice. I only connected one of them over my tank and was shocked at how good they look. Each LED is nice and bright and provides a bit of a spotlight effect. With all my lights off and just the moonlights on, I get nice shimmering effect and the fantastic color pop from my corals. Each LED set (3 LEDs) have quick disconnects and all connect to a normal AC adapter. Will try to take a picture of it on tonight. I'm eventually gonna try to swith over to LEDs, but at least this is a small step in the right direction
zygote2k April 12, 2010 April 12, 2010 wouldn't those be considered 'starlight' bulbs? I thought the idea of a moonlight was to make a barely discernible light source at night that slightly resembles the moon?
Quantum Aquaria April 12, 2010 Author April 12, 2010 don't know about starlight, but it doesn't really light up the whole tank, it adds a nice bluish effect, still dark, but coral colors are flourecent glow.
cabrego April 12, 2010 April 12, 2010 nice, I was thinking about buying these, or some of the other sytles I have seen on ebay. Are these visible when the mainlights are on?
Quantum Aquaria April 12, 2010 Author April 12, 2010 nice, I was thinking about buying these, or some of the other sytles I have seen on ebay. Are these visible when the mainlights are on? not really. my daylights drown out these lights. Might be different once I get the second set hooked up though.
cabrego April 12, 2010 April 12, 2010 I considered getting someting like this for actnic supplementation, but I didn't pull the trigger because I thought my main lights would drown them out. It turns out my actinics were older than I thought. After I replaced them this weekend, it's like I have a brand new tank!

I would think you need something a little stronger to use for actinic supplementation, like the finnex strips or the ones F&F is doing in the group buy, and not the stunner ones.. For actinics I would say 1watt or 3watt LED bulbs would be required.. I use the lunar lights that are blue, and they arent to brite but they give you some nice night viewing ability.. I think thats what these lights that tekken got are perfect for, but not for anything stronger, unless you get an S load of them.. Just my $.02.. Nice pick up tekken..

I got these primarily for moonlight effects when my main lights are off. Currently have a couple of LED strip tubs that I got from Aquatraders that are ok, but the don't make the colors of the corals stand out. These actually do, but they don't light up the whole tank. I've already got my supplemental actinics with T5s, but may eventually switch them out with something like the LED stunners or a DIY setup, but for now, these are exactly what I"m look for.
Quantum Aquaria April 13, 2010 Author April 13, 2010 my camera is not working and the blackberry doesn't take the best picture. Tried to get a good pic of the neon pop that i'm getting from the corals, but picture is too dark. You'll just have to take my word for it that it looks very nice. Pictures below are not great, but should give you an idea of the moonlight affect.
Quantum Aquaria April 13, 2010 Author April 13, 2010 How will you be attaching these lights? right now, i've just got it zip tied to my fixture in the opening ventilation holes... i'm going to screw them in place on a long wooden or aluminum stick and place on the front and back of the fixture.

Thats cool! I got the same ones, and I am trying to fig. out how to mount them lol
Chris- April 14, 2010 April 14, 2010 wouldn't those be considered 'starlight' bulbs? I thought the idea of a moonlight was to make a barely discernible light source at night that slightly resembles the moon? Yea, i am gonna have to go with zygote2k on this one, but i would not use the word "starlight", though it is fitting. I dont know about all of you, but, when I look up, i only see one big moon, not 10-15-24 big moons in a row, so, how they call these moon lights I do not know. None the less, if you get the right ones, they can give a nice shimmering look to the tank. I am trying to find individual LEDs (like from radio shack and such) that do not have the spotlight look, and, in red. I want to see my night time critters moving around, lol. Who uses these and how do they work with the regular T5's on? Can you still get a shimmering effect from them with t5's?
