Jon Lazar December 22, 2009 Share December 22, 2009 Please help me ID this birdnest. I picked it up as an ORA frag from an LFS, but can't remember the name. It's a bright lime green skin with purplish polyps.

davelin315 December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Funny thing about named corals, I had a colony of that 10 years ago that was simply a bird nest. Same colors, same growth pattern, same everything - except it had no name and a 2" frag cost $10. Naming is nice and all, but I think it gets carried to extremes at time... lanman December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Odd growth pattern and polyp arrangement for Tyree Ponape birdsnest. Color is similar, though. bob
Sharkey18 December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 I have the same or very similar one I bought from an LFS and it was sold as ORA Bird of Paradise. Laura ORA bird of paradise
davelin315 December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Seriatopora hystrix. Orange body strain with purple polyps. Depending on the flow they are exposed to, their branches will be thinner, longer, and more delicate, or stubbier, blunt, and thicker.
Boret December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Seriatopora hystrix. Orange body strain with purple polyps. Depending on the flow they are exposed to, their branches will be thinner, longer, and more delicate, or stubbier, blunt, and thicker. Hey Dave, what flow produces which behavior? More flow thinner and less flow thicker? Because I get really thick and stubby growth out of my Birds of Paradise.
davelin315 December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Lighter flow = more spindly Heavier flow = thicker and heavier growth
Boret December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Thanks! I thought it might have been the other way around!! I guess a have quite a bit of flow!

reefhunter December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 (edited) ORA BIRDS OF PARADISE. Although mine is thicker branched and "bushy" from PE. But the colors are exactly the same and I have seen it in other peoples tanks with thin branches and less PE like this. El Camaron December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 Bird of paradise always looked more like a nice thinner stylophora to me. here is my tubbs, bad picture.
phisigs79 December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 my tubbs turned pink in my tank after a few years. Still have the purple polyps just pink. I got it as a 1 inch frag and now its 7 inches around! The tubbs and the so called bird of paradise are the same thing IMO just different names. Its still a birds nest
lhcorals December 23, 2009 Share December 23, 2009 It sorta looks like this one. I got this one a couple months ago. I was told it was called a Frog in a Blender Birds Nest. I purchased it from a member of Richmond Reef Club.
ctenophore December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 I agree w/ tubbs birdnest ID. It is not the same as bird of paradise.

Kind of like a frog in a blender. bob
