mogurnda December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 What are they living in now? Goldfish put out a lot of waste, and will grow rather large, so they need a tank that is minimum 10 gallons. Twenty gallons is better. In ponds, with lots of suspended algae, they can filter feed, but that won't work in a small container. As Happyfeet said, there are good flake foods available for goldfish. My guess is that the goldfish at the fair are "feeders," which have been very crowded and are not fed. Their life spans are not very long unless they get better care. What fair is this? Because this is a marine aquarium site, we aren't really experts in temperate freshwater fish. You might try www.aquariacentral.com, or another more general site.
Malawi December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 I used to keep goldfish. You absolutely should have a filter in the tank and it should be at least 10 gallons, like Mogurnda said. You should plan on keeping fewer goldfish in an aquarium than you could with other fish (tropicals, cichlids, etc), because goldfish are very dirty fish. You'll have to feed them, there's simply not enough for them to get their own food in a bowl or an aquarium. Mine got a blend of flake food and pellets, and they also ate the algae wafers I put in for the algae eaters. Plan on buying the largest tank you have room for and buy a filter that's rated above the requirements for the tank. You can't go wrong with more water flow and higher filtration. Goldfish do like colder water, but a heater is a good idea so that you have a constant temperature in the aquarium. And make sure you keep up with water and filter changes. It's been said before, but I'll say it again- they're fish that put off a lot of waste. Most goldfish end up dying long before their time because they aren't cared for properly. The fair fish seem to have the deck stacked against them from the start. How they're transported and handled doesn't help them stay healthy, and they can get stressed out and sick just like any other fish. Who knows if they dechlorinate the water at the fair, or ever change it? Your goldfish could've been sitting in the same water for a long time and recovering from that will take some TLC. Good luck!
El Camaron December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 your kidding right, did someone create an account to play a joke?
Charlie December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 It gets worse than you think. I was in PetSmart a while back and there was some "person" in there buying them to release in a swimming pool for their kid's birthday party! Their plan was to give the kids nets and let them keep what they caught. Needless to say, I was shocked.

It was like 3 years ago, but I remember hearing about her bright idea and she came out later in the day and all the kids had nets and there was like 200 dead goldfish in the pool. **Thinking back I think they may of had little snorkle masks and they were going to just swim with the fish. When I kept my Goldfish, he lasted 9 years, he was my last freshwater fish to die. I had a carbon filter/bio wheel as the only filtration on the tank. Before I kept other fish with him he was kept in a bowl. I just run two bowls at a time and transferred him back and fourth between the two while the other one was cleaned once a week. Plants always did REALLY well in his tanks too. Edited December 18, 2009 by Happyfeet
zygote2k December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 goldfish should live 25+ years. just not in a bowl without a filter.
Malawi December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 What's worse is I can just picture the person at PetSmart saying sure, it's okay, they can survive in a swimming pool.
davelin315 December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 We did this all the time as a kid for fun fair days. The goldfish can survive without a problem for about 4-5 minutes, far longer than it takes for kids to actually catch them - they are typically all caught within a minute as they are not able to get around that well in the water. These goldfish typically lived for a few years that I caught from the pool. Not to be unkind or unfeeling, but you have to remember that these goldfish are mass produced and aren't exactly destined for life. If they don't die in the pet store tank then they will die when someone feeds them to something else. The only reason they are there in the first place is because someone grew them to be fed to something else. Dumping them into a pool and letting a kid catch them and take care of them gives them a much longer life, or at least chance of life. Now, if your neighbor dumped them in there before the party and then didn't come back for hours...
Happyfeet December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 (edited) if your neighbor dumped them in there before the party and then didn't come back for hours... Yeah she put them in there before the party. I wasn't actually there I just heard this all second hand from my neighbors. I personally think it's hilarious. Edited December 18, 2009 by Happyfeet

When I read pool I thought swimming pool, like the inground kind, and not the kiddie wading pool type. I don't know why my mind jumped right to that type of pool. Maybe not enough caffiene? There's my d'oh moment for the day.
davelin315 December 18, 2009 December 18, 2009 We did the actual swimming pool. The fish were fine and, like I said, easy to catch.
Loves2Fish December 18, 2009 Author December 18, 2009 (edited) Im trying to get the goldfish to become an act, with a sort of house mechanism. First thing i tried to do was get them skinnier, and through that i saw that they filter feeded. I went to wikipedia, and supposedly if you put JUST the right amount (about 1.3 teaspoons) of chlorine, they are able to completely change their personality. The problem is, lately, they dont do anything, they lay on their sides at the top of the fish bowl, they just sleep all day! Im 12 and i just dont know why this is happening!!! my parents said i cant have any more if they keep dying, so hEL!P!P!P!P!!!!!! PLEASE HELP MY SOLVE THE PROBLEM THAT IS MAKING MY GOLDFISHIES SLEEP!!! this is one of the, his name is sebastian. well this is what he looks like, i found him online Edited December 18, 2009 by Loves2Fish
