trockafella September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 Im getting my Mp40 tonight (thanks rob) and would like to here some suggestions on location/placement and installation tips bc I hear it takes some work, especially if you dont have a clue what your doing.. Thanks.. Oh, its a 72gal BF/RR with overflow in left corner..
zygote2k September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 dead center on the rear glass, top of vortech 4" from water surface.
trockafella September 28, 2009 Author September 28, 2009 I realised that I have one of the columns in the dead center, it would have to be to the right of it about 8" off center..
zoozilla September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 ... top of vortech 4" from water surface. +1. But you should really experiment a bit on placement because Rock and coral placement varies from tank to tank. Jake Adams gave an interesting presentation at MACNA this past weekend regarding ideal flow in our tanks. He touched on the subject of "Gyres" or rotating currents and it's importance/application in our Reefs. He demonstrated the principle of gyres using fishfood, a maxijet, Koralia and Vortech MP10 on a 36" long tank. Simple placement made a very big difference flow regardless of what type of pump used.. Some general reading here: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2007/1/aafeature#h4
lanman September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 Another hint for Vortech's. Keep them clean! learn to take apart the inside unit and clean all the algae and stuff out of it. They lose a lot of velocity with only a little algae. bob
steveoutlaw September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 dead center on the rear glass, top of vortech 4" from water surface. I would place it on the side......especially if you have sand in the tank. An MP40 with only 2 feet = sand storm. My MP20 actually caused some trouble there because I had it too low. I definately agree with 4" below the water line. Play with it a little bit.......you're aquascaped will play a big part in where you put it.
Coral Hind September 28, 2009 September 28, 2009 I would place it on the right side and let it push the surface scum towards the left side overflow.
khalid September 29, 2009 September 29, 2009 On my 72 bow I have it on the right side (if you are looking straight at the tank) about 3/4 of the way up set on reefcrest and is doing a great job circulating the whole tank. I had to turn off my tunze because it just seemed to be too much flow.
Steve175 October 4, 2009 October 4, 2009 In addition to location: keep the driver bone dry. Had one of my drivers sitting on a bucket and dropped literally 5cc of SW by mistake on it and fried the motherboard - on the first day I was setting it up!!! Although the service was great, saltwater damage was not covered under warranty (my "I'm not sure why it won't run" didn't fly when I sent it in and it was covered it black soot despite my attempts at cleaning it) and it proved to be a $100 mistake (cost of replacement motherboard which I then installed). Please learn from my idiotic mistake. I don't know how many times I need to relearn that: saltwater + electricity = bad. My 2 cents (actually $100)
