OUsnakebyte August 4, 2009 August 4, 2009 I use to love shark week, but to me it seems that the past few years, the producers(?) of Shark Week have not done much to help sharks. I have not seen the lineup this year, but I did hear a brief bit about it on the radio a few days ago, and once again, I was disappointed. It seems once again that the vast majority of the programs were all about the dangers of sharks, shark bites/attacks, etc., etc. Last year I recall only one program, maybe two, that focused on the science of sharks and really spoke to dispel the myths of the dangers of sharks. Of course, that's what the general public wants to hear/see/believe. That sharks really aren't that dangerous and are vital to the health of the oceans is quite boring to the layperson. One thing that stuck with me after watching Shark Water was the analogy of running with various top predators. No one runs alongside lions, tigers or a pack of hyenas, but thousands of people get in the water and swim next to sharks every single day - that is... if you can find any sharks left in the ocean to swim with... Cheers Mike
jason the filter freak August 4, 2009 August 4, 2009 I've been able to watch a few hours straight (while doing in home care my patient likes to watch) and it seems to me that there is a content line up of 4:1 or so 4(conservation, general education, fun facts) v.s. shark attack accounts etc (but even the shark attack ones seem to cover a lot about how its our fault for tearing up the habitats, not paying attention to warnings, and that you're more likely to be struck by lightning)
dbartco August 4, 2009 August 4, 2009 agree with mik on this one. more people are killed by falling coconuts than sharks/year
blaze98 August 4, 2009 August 4, 2009 "Falling coconuts kill 150 people worldwide each year, 15 times the number of fatalities attributable to sharks," said George Burgess, Director of the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File and a noted shark researcher.
droyal1110 August 4, 2009 August 4, 2009 Yea but I'm not scared of coconuts and I'm pretty sure I can swim faster than them. Plus I can set a tree on fire, shark I cannot.
