Hello.

I currently have a pretty good skimmer, but I want a more powerful one without breaking the bank. I have a medium stocked 90g with a 30g sump, and I'm running an Octopus 150 recirculating needle wheel. One of my issues with this skimmer is it doesn't fit in my stand =/

So with that said the questions:

The diameter of the skimmer is supposedly 5.5", could someone tell me how much more room you need for the pump?

Does the skimmer operate on water level height? If so what height is that?

What kind of loads do you have on this particular skimmer and what tank size?

Any problems with it?

How was the break in period?

Any modifications to meet your liking?

Do you recommend it?

Do you recommend something else?

I was considering looking into GSA skimmers as well but I have no idea where to find them since the website doesn't really work.

Thanks.

I have an ASM G1x on my 150 maintenance tank. The tank has about 12 fish and is fully stocked with corals.

The skimmer gets emptied once a week and it fills the collection cup about 3/4 full. It runs at ANY water level above the inlet of the pump. It doesn't overflow when the water level rises either. You need approximately a 5" square next to the skimmer for the pump to fit. You need a few inches to remove the collection cup from the top.

I have zero mods to the skimmer. I believe it runs the way it was designed for and reccommend it to anyone looking for a reliable skimmer. It outperformed a T1000 and a Deltec clone on this tank and requires little to no adjustments to work as promised. The skimmer works better then the mid-sized Euro-Reef skimmer on another maintenance tank too.

I also use an ASM G2 on another maintenance tank and am equally happy with it.

Don't overspend on a Deltec or a GSA or an insanely overpriced cone skimmer- get an ASM.

(edited)

I had an ASM G3 on my 200+ system for years. I paid $240 for it brand new.

I never understood why people paid more for skimmers. It was great.

I did all the mods on mine, and regretted all but the mesh wheel mod, which I did think was definitely worthwhile, but I also agree with zygote2k, the skimmer works just fine with no mods. HERE is a link to the thread if you are interested.

Respectfully disagree. I have owned many a skimmer (including ASM and Deltec) and the Deltec's far outperformed the ASM. If you are going to have a high bioload and are planning on keeping SPS, I certainly wouldn't skimp on a skimmer.

I have heard the octopus skimmers perform well. Can you not run it external?

IME on the 150 maintenance tank, there was a Deltec clone that didn't work very well due to fluctuating water levels.

I switched it out for the T1000 which I have used almost exclusively for 10+ years on many a maintenance tank. I bought trockafellas' used G1x for my home system and was so impressed by it's simple and effective design that I placed it on the 150. It's been running steadily for 1 year on the 150 and however long Travis had it.

The ASM's are way cheaper than Euro Reefs, Deltecs, GSA's, and their ilk because they don't use high end acrylic in the construction process. I never saw the point in buying a skimmer based on the look of the acrylic. After all it collects poop and grows all sorts of organisms inside it that ultimately scratch the inside surfaces.

Whatever your choice in skimmers will be, make sure it works as promised otherwise you bought a shiny piece of junk.

Does the skimmer operate on water level height? If so what height is that? If you are talking sump depth then mine is currently at 7".

What kind of loads do you have on this particular skimmer and what tank size? G1X on a heavy loaded 75g. I have a G3 on my 120.

Any problems with it? No problems with either one.

How was the break in period? Normal, about two days.

Any modifications to meet your liking? Modded over flow. No gate valve because they are not needed. Standpipe is still adjustable.

Do you recommend it? YES!!

Do you recommend something else? NO!!

My biggest issue is size, performance, and cost. My octopus skimmer does ok but I really want a better skimmer. I also want a skimmer that will fit, but on top of that a skimmer that is quieter. My octopus is really loud and since I'm running it outside of the tank its even worse. I'm considering the asm but am open to other cost effective options. Really the thing I hate about the octopus skimmer is the noise right now.

I would look into the H&S line of skimmers. They are equivilent to the Deltecs, but they make in sump models as well as recirc. I'm using the H&S 90-F1000 on my 40 breeder frag tank and it has performed amazingly well. It could easily handle a much larger tank.
