DaveS May 11, 2009 May 11, 2009 Can you share the good/bad experiences with it? Please also indicate which brand of sand you had. Thanks.
jason the filter freak May 11, 2009 May 11, 2009 I have had nothing but good experiences with my black sand. eI Have a mixture of grey coast calcite (sechem) I think, and carib sea naturals. I have a very particular flow pattern (not high just well directed) and sand sifters and don't have any detritus settlement.

What do you do?
jason the filter freak May 11, 2009 May 11, 2009 my tank is 33" tall, but only 18" x 20" wide/deep i have only two flow sources rena xP4 cannister filter, and the tunze 60655 nanostream about midway up on my back wall aimed down at a 30 or so degree angle it switches from full to 2/3 power via controller. the flow comes down hits flat piece of lr and bounces up toward the front, keeps a vertical laminal flow pattern. the watter column keeps particles suspended very very well that combined with the cross flow from the cannister up near the surface keeps particles flowing toward my overflow (skimmer) and intake (cannister) well. Then I have a sand sifting star, lots of tiny serpent stars, 2 different kinds of snails that sift sand, and my clowns/blenny with all their tail wagging and flipping keep stuff up in the water column.

Thank you. I appreciate this information. It's very helpful to me.
DaveS May 12, 2009 Author May 12, 2009 Hmm, the Seachem Grey Coast seems like it might be what I want. Anyone else have experience with black sand and can offer some advice?
khalid May 13, 2009 May 13, 2009 I have black sand in my 20 gallon BTA, RBTA, and mixed coral tank. It's the Bio-Activ Live
trockafella May 13, 2009 May 13, 2009 I started with the all black sand, didnt really like it.. Looked kinda brown.. Then i went with the black and white live sand, love it..!! Just set up my new tank same thing.. I dont know if I can ever go back, kinda switching to 20k bulbs, after you do it, nothing ever looks the same..!! Jan, you saw my tank, thats the indo black/white sand... I never had any algae issues with it either, when i has reg (white.?) sand, i had more issues with that...
