I recall a year or two ago there was a tank build thread here that showed an interesting stand. I don't recall all the details but the stand was big (as was the tank) and under the tank there was a shelf that was elevated for a refugium that would then drain into the sump. Also the stand was waterproofed so that it could hold an couple of inches of water inside should there be a leak.

Other details that I think were part of that thread: might have been a 400G tank, might have been Tony Gallo's build. These details are not very solid but might help jog someone's memory or search skills. I couldn't find that thread anymore...

Thanks.

I don't know about the thread, but I've done the waterproofing a few times. There are a few ways to do it. One (poor, but effective) way is to put a sheet of styrofoam under the stand if the stand has a bottom edge. As the stand presses down on the foam, it creates a seal and will trap water up to the level of the base's edge. A better way is to lay a pond liner inside the bottom frame and glue/silicone the corner seams together and to the stand.

Pond liner or shower pan liner from home depot/lowe's. I used the shower pan liner since it's usually cheaper. It's been tested several times and works great!

When I built my stand I made a well out of the sides and bottom to hold several gallons inside. I polyurethaned the inside wood and caulked the seams and screw holes so it would be waterproof. I also built moisture detectors out of parallel wires connected to a smoke alarm. A few drops of water closes the circuit across the wires, acting like a switch to activate the alarm's battery test function.

Very clever! I suppose that should be low enough voltage to send to an aquacontroller digital input too.

Are you going to build your own stand?

Here is my stand that I built and it has a build in basin that I sealed and painted with marine paint. I have a stand with my refug on it (left side) which over flows into the sump. I put a water alert in the bottom and it has saved the floor every time it overflowed, etc. I also have a continer of kalk and skimmate. I have since added a 5 G bucket with a ATO.

Yup, looks like I'm going to redo my entire fish room!

I'm going to try and seal the floor of the stand as well as the actual room itself so it can hold an inch or more of water. I got a drain in the floor but it's not sloped properly. Being able to hold 1" of water should allow the drain to work in the event of a huge failure.

Thanks for finding the thread Rik. It's the right one, but without pictures I'll have to rely on my poor memory...
