Rascal December 30, 2008 December 30, 2008 My $.02: Rapid removal of detritus doesn't equal rapid removal of current nutrient levels in tank water. It just prevents a future increase. Whether by vacuum, siphon, pump, towel, whatever . . . 1/4" of poop just sitting there rotting at the bottom of the system is not a good thing. I would find away of getting it out of there ASAP.
zygote2k December 30, 2008 December 30, 2008 why not stir it up into the water column and let the filter feeders/skimmer remove it?
stevearlen December 30, 2008 December 30, 2008 well to clarify this is an on going proscess there is about 1/4" of beige/grey detritus built up on the bottom of her sump... Option #47 - Auction this stuff to folks that need something to seed the cycle process for a new tank.... Seriously, this is a very good thread that has given me some good ideas to improve O&M on my tank. Steve
flowerseller December 30, 2008 December 30, 2008 why not stir it up into the water column and let the filter feeders/skimmer remove it? IMO, This stirring it up crap that keeps coming up is the last thing you'd want to do. Unless you're a glutton for punishment. Suck it all out before they have a chance to release all the toxicitey into the tank. Get it out and keep it out whether you remove as much as you can at one time or over the course of a few days*. * the least preferred. Why not carefully drain the top water off to a inch above the muck, remove the sump dump it, clean it and start fresh. No new tools or equipment required and her fish and corals will reward you with growth.

So far it only has to be done about four times a year for me.
