trble81 December 4, 2008 December 4, 2008 I've got a Vortec question that I'm hoping owners or former owners or just people in the know could answer. I guess my question is how wide is the flow? Is the water movement coming off the pump pretty compact (essentially is it pretty directed or stream-lined coming off the pump) or is the flow coming off at a wide angle (even though the pump is X diameter, it's moving half the water in your tank, for instance)? Seeing the wave action in some videos, I would get it would be the wide angle sort of movement but I figured I would ask. Thanks in advance and I'm sorry if my wording is terrible...it is like 6:20 in the morning...
DEEPBLUE December 4, 2008 December 4, 2008 Its becomes wide very fast and on full power it will move some water. If you can afford one, in my opinion, they are the best pumps out that. Eric
SteveM December 4, 2008 December 4, 2008 I second what Deepblue said. The flow is pretty wide. I have two in my 110g, one on each end and the flow over the entire tank is amazing. So far they are the best pumps I have ever used.
lanman December 5, 2008 December 5, 2008 I now have three in my 240 - as stated, the pattern spreads very quickly - but still carries well across the 5' tank. Before I got mine - someone brought three over and we played a bit... on the alternating, on-off setting, we were getting 1" waves splashing over my overflow. I decided that wasn't such a good idea, though - I have a glasscages tank. After a few rumors of seam failures - I started having visions of 240 gallons of water rapidly flushing out on to the floor. Now I keep them in synch. bob
trble81 December 5, 2008 Author December 5, 2008 Very cool. I've already gotten some pumps planned out but they're nothing special (modded MJ900s), but I was looking for an awesome pump to help me out with getting good flow in the planned 90 gallon. I was starting to price out what I had in mind or different options (like 2 controllable Korelias and the Hydor wavemaker) and noticed that an MP40w is priced basically the same. Time to save some pennies...
DEEPBLUE December 5, 2008 December 5, 2008 For a 90 gallon you only need 1 MP40, I think its good for 3000 gallons per hour, or even better it you can afford it, get 2 and put one on each side and have them sinked. Eric
dtfleming December 5, 2008 December 5, 2008 I have one mp40W on reef crest mode in my 40gal and had to dial it down. It def puts out some flow. I like the night mode also and feed mode.
