dbartco October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 I thought I would start a thread on my latest time consuming effort. I wanted to learn how to raise the clowns my ocellaris have been laying regularly for the last few years. I always let them become food or fodder, but never took the time grow live foods. rotifers: Here is dad years ago: So I guess I am pretty lucky. I took a tile that I had kept in my sump for a few months and put it next to the anemone. Two weeks later I had eggs on the tile. On day 7 I moved the eggs to a hatchery tank. Day 8 I came downstairs excited, just to find out my eggs take 9 from laying to hatch. Day 9, I came downstairs to the tile laying face down :( :( , and about 30 little guys that hatched. Of that 30-40, 12 have made it to metamorphosis. 12 have made it so far to day 14 after hatching: Last night I had my second batch hatch. I made a little tile holder from acylic so nothing fell. Too many to count. They did hatch in 2 nights. I think most that hatched the second night did not make it too long, but here they are in this AM. You can count all the little buggars if you want. Multiply this by about 4-5 to get the total in the tank right now. I will update more as things progress. Pretty fun to try your hand at this. Fairly easy, not a ton of investment, and I have learned a TON. I will continue this for a while, then move on to the Bangaiis and seahorses. A big thank you to Traveller7 (scott wilson) for a lot of great advice.
sde219 October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 Congrats Doug. That's really great. Please keep us posted on how it goes and what works for you.
DJBoy98 October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 Cool. How do you know when 2 clowns have mated instead of likeing to hang out with each other? How do you know when she's preggo so that you can put out the tile? Did you do anything to get them in the mood? Moon phase simulations? Barry White music? p0Rn?
jason the filter freak October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 Doug this is freaking awesome congrats! here's to success
dbartco October 30, 2008 Author October 30, 2008 How do you know when 2 clowns have mated instead of likeing to hang out with each other? When she lays a clutch of eggs. Otherwise, they are friends without benefits How do you know when she's preggo so that you can put out the tile? Her abdomen will bulge near her vent. He will nuzzle her a bit, and clean a spot on a rock, tile, whatever they find. Most don't take to the tile so quickly, but these guys have been laying since I got them 3 years ago so it is old hat for them. Did you do anything to get them in the mood? Moon phase simulations? Barry White music?p0Rn? As per Traveller7, if they have already mated, feed them a lot, high quality, variety. After that, like clockwork every few weeks.
reefchick October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 Thats is awesome! How exciting. I had fresh water Jack Dempsey's that laid eggs all the time. None ever survived but I didn;t remove them from the tank.

dbartco October 30, 2008 Author October 30, 2008 congrats Doug...if and when my picassos dcide to breed I might have to call upon u for some help.. Only if I get to keep a few!! What are you feeding them for the first six days? Rotifers for the first 5ish, then rots and babybrine till 14 daysish, mixing in crushed flakes/cyclops starting at 12ish. There are a lot of "-ishes" depending on species, breeder preference. I admit, I am quite new at this. But I think 30%-40% to bring this far is pretty good. We will see about clutch #2. Ha, remembered I bought these clowns from Krish. Get it, ish......... I'm a dork
