reefhunter October 28, 2008 October 28, 2008 What lighting would you get for a solana? The stock light, the sunpod 250 or another light with halides and t5/cf? I was thinking about getting something with supplement lighting to run the lights more hours per day. This will be primarily SPS! Thanks!
jason the filter freak October 28, 2008 October 28, 2008 I like my Current Sunpod Very much I run a 14k bulb, I think you may be more pleased with growth if you run a different spectrum bulb with actinic supplementation.
reefhunter October 28, 2008 Author October 28, 2008 Jason are you running a 250 or 150? I was thinking the 250 may be better for SPS??? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...fm?pcatid=15486 what about these?

I'd run the outer orbit pro if I could afford it.
trockafella October 28, 2008 October 28, 2008 Hey, i have the same tank as jason, i run a 400w radium with cf actinics, looks great, gets plenty of depth and gives you the ability to grow anything..
trockafella October 28, 2008 October 28, 2008 Its a fixture, but it has a nice reflector.. Works good b/c the tank is only 18" wide.. I would prefer T5s with it and that will eventually be the plan, to do a custom canopy, but for now im happy, nice colors, did some lunar lights to the top cover i built.. I will put some new pics up on thread...
jamesbuf October 28, 2008 October 28, 2008 I would just go with a single MH over the tank, and run it for longer hours. Get a DE fixture and run a 14K bulb, so you won't need supplementation. Go with the Phoenix 14K since they put out great color, and are a relatively inexpensive bulb as far as MH bulbs go. Simplify this setup as much as possible, so it doesn't add more "chore" time in your maintenance.

I was thinking about getting something with supplement lighting to run the lights more hours per day. This will be primarily SPS! Thanks! I have thought about changing out the 150, DE MH pendant. I thought about going with something with a 250 and t5's but have been holding out to see how things work with the 15K pheonix, about 6in above the waterline. I like the color and growth. I had a birdsnest frag in the sand and had decent growth. I would worry about heat with a 250...unless you plan to use a chiller. Temp got up to about 81 during the day during the summer but not much more. I have also raised the light up since then. RC has a thread in their Nano section dedicated to Solana owners. You could look there and see what people are running. It might give you some comparisons to help you make a decision. Ron Edited October 30, 2008 by onux20
reefhunter October 30, 2008 Author October 30, 2008 Heat is certainly an issue. I dont want to use a chiller unless I have to. This tank is going upstairs vs downstairs (where the big tank is). I want supplements but a single black pendant would look good too... or I can go with the stock globe light... which is the cheapest alternative.... decisions decisions...
jamesbuf October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 I say you just sell me the Solana, so I can use it in my bedroom That's by far the simplest solution to your problem
