WallyBackm August 1, 2008 August 1, 2008 Finally filling my 120--I need to buy live sand locally as I don't want to use the live sand I have in my 72 now. How many lbs do you think I need? Where should I buy? (trying not to spend much $) Which variety should I buy? Thanks
Hilary August 1, 2008 August 1, 2008 When I started the 90 I just used a bag (30 lb) of Carib Sea Aragonite (Aragamax) in addition to the rest of the new sand. You can probably find it at any LFS.
gmubeach August 1, 2008 August 1, 2008 Most people put in dead reef sand and then seed it with the live stuff... I'm sure someone on here can help you out:)
davelin315 August 1, 2008 August 1, 2008 Curious, why don't you want to use your old sand? I would simply rinse it out and go with it (you can do a super clean of it if you want to start over by just spreading it out on a tarp and running water over it) to preserve life and bacteria. Live sand from the ocean is simply that, sand that they scooped out and rinsed a tiny bit.
Highland Reefer August 1, 2008 August 1, 2008 Just curious, what's the possibility of getting bristle worms with the live sand?
davelin315 August 2, 2008 August 2, 2008 Just curious, what's the possibility of getting bristle worms with the live sand? If you need some, come on over. If you don't want them, good luck, they're in live rock and will proliferate with feeding. As long as you keep detritus and nutrients down, though, they won't overtake your tank and will serve their purpose. As for getting them in sand, most of mine stay in the rock, but they will traverse the sand and sometimes get caught up in there if there's some rubble or were left there when I lifted something.
hbh August 3, 2008 August 3, 2008 I reused mine and rinsed for 1/2 hour in a bucket outside with tap water then used Prime and reseeded from my other tank and live rock. The tank then sat up and running for a week and then livestock was added with no ill effects. No bristleworms survived the washing. HTH.
Sikryd August 3, 2008 August 3, 2008 Bristle worms are cool! I got one that is over a foot long. I named him cornhoolio jk - If I catch him cruisin' again he's going to get the ole' ****** and grab and be swimming in the grass in my backyard... I took out the big rock he lived in when I re-aquascaped, so hopefully he was in it when I did!
quazi August 4, 2008 August 4, 2008 (edited) The Aquarium Company in Reston has great sand prices on crushed coral. Roozens is also good, if you are willing to go with the dark side. Edited August 6, 2008 by quazi
