Larry Grenier July 18, 2008 July 18, 2008 I'll be having new hardwood floors put in my den soon. I will place my custom 96gal tank stand on some kind of a pad rather than directly on the wood. It has alot of surface touching the floor; not just the edges like most off-the-shelf stands. I suppose I could get a bunch of those felt furniture pads; they work great for other furniture; of-course my other furniture isn't a constant 800lbs. Any other ideas? It has to look good too.

I had a chunk of carpet cut to fit under my tank and leave about a 6" border. Looks nice.

Did you have a border put on it? What is your avatar? That isn't a nasty tooth is it? Edited July 18, 2008 by Larry Grenier

I just use another piece of hardwood flooring. For you situation, I'd just build a little platform out of the left over flooring, cut it to size trim off the tongue and grove edging, stain it and viola, tank stand pad that matches the hardwood flooring.
Highland Reefer July 18, 2008 July 18, 2008 You could simply use a sheet of pressure treated plwood cut to fit at Home Depot. Then install shoe molding around it after you put the stand on it. If water leaks onto the pressure treated plywood, it will not rot.
YBeNormal July 18, 2008 July 18, 2008 Depends. What is the intent of having something between the stand and the hardwood flooring? Are you looking for ventilation under the stand, protecting the flooring from scratches (still have something resting on the floors so I'm not sure this would help), something that would catch and hold small spills, or some other reason?

I'm setting up a tank on hardwood floors so i'm curious also... what IS your intent?
Hilary July 19, 2008 July 19, 2008 I would think that any kind of pad would trap moisture against those nice new floors. Not that anybody ever gets water on the floor when working on their tanks.....
geofloors July 19, 2008 July 19, 2008 If you're worried about the weight denting the floor then just use felt pads around the perimeter of the stand. Don't put anything under the stand to catch water because it will never dry out, potentially ruining a good area of the floor. Instead use rubber backed mats in front of the tank to catch any spills while doing maintenance and pick them up after you're finished. Water is a hardwood floors enemy. George

I had them sew the edges so it wasn't ragged. It was pretty cheap (I had it done from a remnant at a carpet store) My avatar is a flying tiger oscar (some of us have hobby-related avatars) tim Edited July 19, 2008 by extreme_tooth_decay
