1) Anyone know if there is an issue gluing schedule 40 and 80 pvc together? Anything weird that prevents reliable joints?

2) Anyone ever PVC glue two threaded connections together? Any suggestions on what to do and not to do? I know it sounds stupid but I have a specific need to do this.

Thanks.

No problem glueing PVC sch 40/80 together. They will both have the same sized outside diameter even thought the 80 has a thicker wall.

Yes, you can glue threaded connections.

I have done both of these - no problems at all. I did not use any primer when I glued the threaded connections - but that's mostly b/c I forgot to...

I agree there is no problem glueing these two tyes together. Just double check you joints after glueing for secure contact.

I'm curious WHY everyone is gluing threaded PVC???

I'd worry that the drying glue would prevent you from fully threading the connection, weakening the joint. What is the positive side?

I don't want to sound judgmental but it makes me worry when we add aomething to the process "just in case." A pet peeve of mine is silicone on a bulkhead, which doesn't help at all and makes it more difficult to tighten or replace if / when that is needed.

Everyone? I have never glued a threaded PVC fitting. Maybe you meant to say "everyone but Bob"? ;)

Just wondering? Why would you glue a threaded joint? I built my return pipe with a threaded fitting pipe cpnnect to the bulkead and then sealed it with telfon tape. Works for me then from that point I used sch 40 pipe the rest of the way down to the refugium. But there is a method to everone's madness.

1) I do this all the time, pvc is pvc is pvc schedule is a pipe size

2) I do this all the time as well. I use threaded unions for transitions of barbed fittings to pipe, no need to ever undo the threading as that is what the union is for, pipe will not accidentally become unscrewed when twisting on it to remove saltcreep locked unions <---- specific need, who you callin' stupid?

I've only done it once, and it was a special case. I had a specialty pvc connector (male thread x reducing barb to a very odd size) that I needed, and the one I had was c-r-u-s-t-y. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. Needless to say, one end of this piece was threaded, but the threads didn't quite match up with the female end of the new piece I was threading it to. I tried several rounds of tape to no avail. Finally, I decided to go out on a limb and glue the sucker - worked like a charm. Again, I've only done this once.

I stopped siliconing (if that is a verb...?) bulkheads long ago - after I found out I was a moron for doing that...

Well just finished my plumbing job for the night. Almost got everything done but I ran out of Teflon tape. Ohhh, shoulda just used glue...

For me, I glued some threaded fitting together because I was using a threaded nipple to connect 2 threaded joints together. The nipple is fairly short so there is no area in the middle to grab. By cementing ONE side of the nipple to a joint, I am able to control which side of the nipple comes undone in the future if/when I unscrew that connection. Maybe there's a better way to do this but it's what I had to work with.

Thanks for answering the questions guys. You input allowed me to get things done by the time I needed to.

Interesting!!

Always learning something.

BTW Dave, love that avitar pic

Maybe there's a better way to do this but it's what I had to work with.

And that statement right there sums it up soooooo often for me... :drink:
