Vader May 4, 2008 May 4, 2008 I hear some like to skim wet and some prefer to skim dry. Is there an advantage over the other?

flowerseller May 5, 2008 May 5, 2008 I skim between dry and wet but slightly on the drier side. Therefore I get a slight bit more gunk on the riser tube wall but a rich dark naDc in the collection container.
rioreef May 5, 2008 May 5, 2008 Is what forms on the riser a concentrate of the liquid that collects in the cup? I can get a lot on the riser, but minimal in the cup sometimes.
Vader May 5, 2008 Author May 5, 2008 great article Cliff, thanks. **************** p.s. I saw you do it

I am inclined to thing that a skimmer rated for up to 100g is actually too big to work properly on a 16g tank... I don't believe bigger is better with that much of a gap.

treesprite May 6, 2008 May 6, 2008 could you put a gate valve on the skimmer outlet to slow down the out comig water? they aren't made in a way that it can be done. The outlet is kind of like the part of a hang-on filter would be with the water flowing over into the tank. It's a hang-on skimmer. Fortunately I got it used for 20 bucks - I would never buy one of these brand new. I have an Odyssea ps160 at home - inexpensive but the particular one I have works very well WHEN used IN-SUMP. I tried to use it as a hang-on before - it doesn't work near as well that way, which may be why people don't see that it can do a decent job. When used in a sump with a constant water level, it needs no adjustment at all. I have disgusting thick dark green gunk, good foam that is easy to control, and yukky dark green soup. The cap has a hole in it, so I went ahead and put a piece of airline in it, so when there is fluid in the cup I can just suction it out instead of having to take the cup off to dump it. The only thing I see bad about it is having to clean off that nasty gunk.
stevearlen May 6, 2008 May 6, 2008 I hear some like to skim wet and some prefer to skim dry. They pretty much taste the same. Just use a spoon for dry and a straw for wet.....
CHUBAKAH May 6, 2008 May 6, 2008 They pretty much taste the same. Just use a spoon for dry and a straw for wet..... I just cleaned my skimmer like 20 minutes ago, and boy did reading that just turn my stomach. Ewwwww

If you scrape off the gunk in the riser and shake it up with teh liquid in the cup, you will have yourself a tasty protien enriched shake.... just don't forget the corn syrup and vanilla
