Wave Maker

Hello all new to the forum. I just setup a 120g AGA and wanted to know what type of wave maker to use in it. I do not have a preference.

Wich ever one suits your power heads the best, or do you plan to have a closed loop, or have a wave maker on your return pump.

Usually a wavemaker is for semi-random flow in the tank. What you put in depends on what you're planning to keep. A pair of Tunze 6101 pumps with either the Tunze controller or the AquaController's AquaSurf is a popular choice. Multiple MaxiJet 1200's with the Hydor FLO attachement is popular. As is using several SeaSwirls. Closed loops with an Oceans Motions are extremely popular, but if you've already set up your tank, drilling to set up a closed loop probably isn't an option. Several people will recommend doing an "over the back" closed loop, but generally that's just asking for problems IMO.

I have sort of a mesh of everything:

2xEheim 2217's with spray returns

4xMJ1200's w/ a redsea wavemaster

2xreturn pvc with from my sump pump (sen 900)

but I really really like the MJ's with the wavemaster. It has several modes, and I keep mine on the mode that rotates between the three other modes every 4 hours.

My only complaint is that the MJ magnet adapters are like $20 each and those suction cups they come with kinda suck, but otherwise, its low cost, easy, and effective. Esp if you find one on WAMAS. I was able to pick mine up with 4 or so frags from a member here real cheap.

Depending on your setup, another option I've heard of (but haven't tried) is something called a SQWD, or Switching Current Water Director. (You can find them at MarineDepot.com and Drsfostersmith.com.) It goes inline on the return plumbing. Requires no electricity or powerheads, but does put some backpressure on your return pump. Almost everything I've read about them has been very positive, and the few bad reviews I've seen sounded like a bum unit rather than a design problem. I'm thinking of using one on a 90g I'm planning to build soon.
