Bob January 22, 2008 January 22, 2008 I posted a while back to ask people how they cleaned the debris out of their sumps...... since mine is on the floor I cant get much suction to get it really cleaned. It seems a lotta (s#%t) sticks on the bottom of mine. Well, I found the answer at Home Depot. I bought a 2.5 gal. wet/dry vaccum on sale for $17.00 plus tax. It works fabulous. I think I will eventually figure out how to reduce the hose diameter because itt sucks out 2.5 gal very quickly. I emptied the sucker twice and had an empty and CLEAN sump. Yea!!! bob
treesprite January 22, 2008 January 22, 2008 you didn't end up draining a lot of water out of the sump doing that?
lanman January 22, 2008 January 22, 2008 I still intend to build a sump vacuum. When I make it work, I'll send you the design! bob
Grav January 23, 2008 January 23, 2008 Bob / Bob, The shop vac works fine for this, I could use something between my 15g shopvac and the dustbuster... sounds like a good deal. Bob, one idea: you can also reduce the speed of the shopvac by restricting the air flowing out of it. Some other ideas for the other Bob: Python makes a nice little hose for this purpose, this will not only remove water, but put it right down the sink... A little pricy but YES it works "up hill." A MJ1200 and a little bit of hose works pretty good too, of course you need a bucket to pump it into.
YBeNormal January 23, 2008 January 23, 2008 Sump vacuum: Add a bucket with a tight lid between the vac and the sump. Drill a hole in the outer edge of the lid and insert a fitting for the hose that you will use to clean out the sump. Drill another hole in the center and mount a fitting for the vac hose. The smaller tubing going to the sump should restrict flow quite a bit. If the suction is still too strong, add another hole in the lid and insert a john guest valve or other valve that can be opened to allow air in. When the bucket gets full, simply remove the lid and dump the bucket. Your shop vac will stay dry through the entire operation. I used a similar DIY rig for sawdust collection (33g metal trash can) before I bought my monster dust collector and yes, I used it to vacuum water and leaves too!.
