Whats the total light of your tank like in watts. That will determine what kinds of corals you can have. If you want you can stop by and see my nano its a 24 gallon jbj delux with 120watts of light that I am upgrading to 250watts at the end of the week. Its a gorgous tank My first recomendation would be more cleaners and live rock if you want corals. I would join wamas get in on the message boards go to group buys and get some cleaners shipped to you. As for live rock you can either go to doctor macs facility and pick it up by hand for a little less then 4.00$ a pound plus its a fun adventure! Here is the website! www.drmaccorals.com the company is pacific east aquaculture! As for live rock if you don't mind used live rock I have seen it go as low as 3$ a pound on the forum. So its really a toss up. Anyway after you get established I am sure someone will trade/give you softies that I am sure will work.

Woah! Slow down a bit here. He is already a student member of WAMAS and has access to all member areas of WAMAS.

Before recommending group buys and trips to the eastern shore to buy live rock, let's explore what his experience level is, what issues or questions he might have, what he finds interesting and what he would like avoid. Most nanos could easily be stocked with small frags from other members tanks for little or no cost! :)

So, tell us more skippie!

Thats how I set my tank up:) Live rock from Docter Mac at 4$ a pound Best deal on new stuff I could find. Anyway I was a student when I set it up, but they might be a highschooler makes it a bit harder. I guess I just love the travel. Anyway the problem I ran into was the fact that at a 12 gallon or 24 didn't hold much so it was better to get what I wanted then to go kenya tree coral/dead half cycled rock(like my local lfs wanted me to). :) And your right I did get excited. I will try and think before I speak next time.

Yeppers pictures are great! I wish I had found this furom sooner though in that its helped me alot with cost/knowledge.

Oh and one more thing what kind of hermit is it? My first and BIGGEST mistake was the fact that I put a red legged hermits, along with zebras, and blue legged hermits. Anyway the long and short of it was they grew and grew and grew anyway fish can't run very fast with a 24 gallon tank and one day I found a quater/halfdollers sized hermit eating my clownfish/sixline wrasse. Its taken me 2 years but I finally readded blue legged hermits to my tank. Very tragic! Anyway the best advice I can give is to ask for advice:) Reading and education is the best thing you can do in this hobby, that and water testing. I made a super crab basically he would eat all the other hermits, fish, corals. It was frightening how big he got, but who knows maybe I just got a bad crab and couldn't idetify it.... SUPER VILLIAN CRABS :(

Oh and make sure your tank is grounded I electricuted myself very badly 5 months ago:)

GREAT picture taking!!! I am impreessed is it a false perlucla or a true perlucla its cute either way! I have a false in my tank and hes adorable! Need a better camra so I can take some better photos of the tank. Anyway I like your rock sceem too. Makes the tank look bigger. Mine is all about functaulity the corals are positioned right under the light and theres a cave for fish to hide in... Anyway I had to get rid of 30 extra pounds of live rock to make it look nice I over bought:p but was too stuborn to let some of it go anyway it looks good now. I am impressed!

Very good picture taking on lorenzo hes a good crab:) Hopefully he doesn't get too big... HEs a blue legged hermit .. good picture taking! Its hard to get good at taking pictures especially when your hands shake:) Anyway Do you know what kind of snail Drake is? Anyway I used to name mine too I just name the fish now!

well i am about 90% sure that my perlucla is a true perlucla... aside from that i have 2 specific questions,

1. does anyone have suggestions for species of coral/anemonies? if so please state the species and provide a picture if possible.

2. does this mean my crab is a SUPER VILLAIN CRAB?????

P.S. thanks for all the help

look here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdis...&forumid=36 for info on clownfish compatibility. crabs are a mixed bag. they do a good job with cleaning but snails will be attacked.

I'm a little confused. In this picture it looks like there is also already a BTA and a featherduster

Best advice I could give to anyone starting out in the hobby is to read a few good books first to build a solid foundation of knowledge. My two favorites:

Natural Reef Aquarium- John Tullock and Martin Moe

The Conscientious Marine Acquarist- Robert Fenner and Christopher Turk

Nope the crab from what I have read is the smallest of the 3 and I put them in my own tank 3 days ago. Its their bigger cousins. I would stick to blue legged like the one you have. oh and make sure you put empty shells in there for him. They need empty shells for when they grow! If you don't put shells in they will eat/detach your snails to make a new home. Shells like the ones hes in not like clam shells.

well, im sorry i forgot to mention, all of the coral you see is just a backround for decoration...

remember the only real rock are the three pieces of live rock

P.S. if anyone can find a good species of anemone for my clown that would be great.

so, how long would you say it would be between the time of first found shell to get new one???

generally it is understood that the blue legged hermits are the most aggressive to snails and in general. watch your snail population. you can just get 10 shells to start with as soon as you can

Ahh, I see. Fooled me.

You don't really need an anemone for your clown. They do just fine in captivity without them, and many will host in just about anything. Pumping Xenia is a good choice as a starter coral because it is easy to keep and you can probably get some in this club for free, or next to it.

If you do decide to get an anemone eventually I would recommend a bubble tip anemone (BTA). As anemone go they are very easy to keep and they are often captive propagated, so if it doesn't work out you won't have to feel as guilty. Some species of anemone are reported to live for hundreds of years in the wild, but often don't last 6 months in most people's tanks.

If you are just starting out I would stick to easier to keep and soft corals like xenia, zooanthids, and mushrooms for now.

On the Virginia side the best LFS's (IMO) are http://www.blueribbonkoi.com/ ; http://www.marinescene.com/index.shtm ; and http://finsandfeathers.storesecured.com/.

Before you add any corals to your tank, you do need to come up with a plan to trade out that crushed coral for sand. They won't tolerate the nitrates that are bound to accumulate over time using the cc substrate.

Its per polyp like each head is 3 dollers so that piece would be 24 dollers. Its not a bad deal and its a zooanthid and they are a good starter coral. I have never seen one that colorful though. Thats really cute. Anyway I would take zotzers advice first she seems to know whats going on. :) The best thing about zoo's is that they can be fragged easily enough so you can trade them. So you can get more colors/ diffrent colors. Anyway make sure you get everything together the way you want it corals are well hard to keep alive if your constently changeing sand/ph/nitrates/calcuim.

One warning about corals/zoos/anemies until your sure your not allergic to them you should touch them with gloves. NON POWERED LATEX I use nitiral gloves.
