sheac12 January 9, 2008 January 9, 2008 (edited) Well after spending a week in Aruba for my best bud's wedding I brought back some great looking rock I found on the shore that I would like to use in my 90GAL tank. My question is what is the best way to prepare this? Should I treat it like uncured "live" rock? Should I do something else? Would baking the rock be best first? Ideas and suggestions would be great. Thanks! Edited January 9, 2008 by sheac12
gmubeach January 9, 2008 January 9, 2008 I think that might be illigal I don't know what the rules are from aruba I only use captive bred/aquacultured stuff. I know its highly illigal if its from hawii or other United States islands. Personally, I would be weary of putting wild rock in my tank it might have stuff/hichhikers. I would cure/dip it till it was bear rock and reseed it, Its nothing personal about the rock just a warning. Best wishes Troy

I even declared it on my customs sheet. My bag was searched and they let it pass without taking it. I asked the locals about it, because as you said it is against the law in Hawaii and I remember that from going there. The locals I asked(hotel staff, fishermen, random aquarium store off main street) claimed it was fine and multiple people said
gmubeach January 9, 2008 January 9, 2008 Not sure about curing. If you declared it thats awesome! Take lots of pictures. Anyway hope your tank looks wonderful. Oh, Don't try and boil it use a dip. Boiling it will give off some crazy vapors that might land you in the hospital. I had some guy try and convince me that boiling it was safe off of another forum. Thank god I did more research!
Bob January 9, 2008 January 9, 2008 I have picked up shells and other things from the beach that I have picked up while @ my parents house in Florida and also from the keys. I think u should treat as another live rock and give it a cure before putting in tank and go for it. Bob
lanman January 13, 2008 January 13, 2008 Off the beach? IMHO it likely has nothing alive in it. Just wash it up good, and put it in your sump for a while to pick up some beneficial bacteria, etc. If it's just a couple of rocks in a large tank, I wouldn't give it much concern. bob

It was partially submerged at high tide so i figured I should error on the side of caution and let it sit dry for a while, before setting it in the sump.
