Mystical Lady August 9, 2007 August 9, 2007 I am completely AMAZED at the difference in such a short time...... I bought a PhosBan Reactor 150 which is a H.O.T. for me. It arrived yesterday and I had it up and running by 8pm last night. I checked the phosphates before going to bed(8:30pm) and the test showed .50 (yes, I know that it is HIGH)...... I figured it would take a week to see changes but WOW!! when I woke up to get ready for work at 3:30AM..... the test showed ZERO!!! I am AMAZED!! and now a believer that a phosphate reactor is a MUST for my tank.... WOW WOW WOW

Be careful, do not continue to run it too long as you will strip the water and some have had corals bleach. john

dandy7200 August 9, 2007 August 9, 2007 Oh really?? Thanks for the headsup, john, I didnt realize that. I thought it was suppose to be run ALL the time....... thanks! They can be run all the time. Issue is not stripping the water too fast at first, then you can switch to 24/7. Also GFO's lower your alk a little so watch that parameter.

I can't keep them in my display tank - they do fine in my under-skimmed, under-cleaned frag tank. But that's okay - you won't have room for xenia's after your SPS take off like a rocket. bob
treesprite August 9, 2007 August 9, 2007 Sounds great - I wish they had something like that for nitrate.
lanman August 9, 2007 August 9, 2007 Sounds great - I wish they had something like that for nitrate. They do - skimmers! Gets the organics out of the water before it can become nitrates. bob

Mystical Lady August 9, 2007 Author August 9, 2007 Issue is not stripping the water too fast at first, then you can switch to 24/7. soooooooo .. do you think I did a bad thing going from .50 to Zero...... *shriver* I am afraid of ruining everything I worked so hard for....... thinking I was doing a good thing......... UGH
flowerseller August 9, 2007 August 9, 2007 Sounds great - I wish they had something like that for nitrate. They do - skimmers! Gets the organics out of the water before it can become nitrates. bob I've seen plenty of systems with the biggest and baddest skimmers and nitrate was off the scale. Water changes are your best friend coupled with a well maintained system.

treesprite August 10, 2007 August 10, 2007 my tank is bare bottomed in some spots and not others - which spots depends on movement in the tank. I had evil crushed coral harbouring an entire evil nitrate empire! I have to say, I have never had a detectable level of phosphate.
'Ric August 10, 2007 August 10, 2007 Clams and Red Mangroves also help remove Nitrates, but you need a lot. At best I think they cam just help lengthen the period between changes.
dandy7200 August 10, 2007 August 10, 2007 I've seen plenty of systems with the biggest and baddest skimmers and nitrate was off the scale. Water changes are your best friend coupled with a well maintained system. This is such common misinformation in the hobby. Skimmers CANNOT strip nitrates out of the water folks, they can however prevent them from building up in the first place. Once the wonderful nitrogen cycle has converted waste to nitrate the best way to get rid of it quickly is water changes. soooooooo .. do you think I did a bad thing going from .50 to Zero...... *shriver* I am afraid of ruining everything I worked so hard for....... thinking I was doing a good thing......... UGH .50 to Zero is not a HUGE change. 2ppm to ZERO in that time frame could cause an entire system to crash. I don't believe your in particular danger or else you would likely know by now. It was more of just a general warning for others who may come across this thread. Be sure to test your alk though, it dropped, I can promise you that, you just need to make sure that it didn't drop too low and if it did just bring it back up SLOWLY Now that I have you here though, would you mind sharing what media you chose to use and why? TIA
Mystical Lady August 10, 2007 Author August 10, 2007 Now that I have you here though, would you mind sharing what media you chose to use and why? TIA Thanks for the putting my mind at ease... I get alittle worried everytime I 'add' something to my tank PhosBan Reactor 150 with PhosBan mostly because it is a HOT system as I do not have a sump :( I used the PhosBan because it is a name I have heard alot of and the ad said "A favored chemical filter media because it will not leach substances back into your aquarium. Largest adsorption capacity of any phosphate filtering media." I tried to do as much research as I could before buying the reactor and media but the information out there really confuses me (I am NOT a chemist) so hopefully, this system will do good for my tank....... hopefully Oh and it was on Sale........

He was responding to my post: (lanman @ Aug 9 2007, 04:40 PM) They do - skimmers!
