Upgrading Tank Step by Step

Im planning to upgrade my tank or total aquascape in a near future

If upgrading I want to go from 45g 36"Lx"12W"x24H" to something similar but wider like 18W. I dont know but I just hate having a tank with 12"W not much room for sandbed around the rock. Mayeb it just my tank but right now my aquascape just suck, there are alot of dead spot in my tank without flow.

I know alot of u guys upgrade ur tanks before. Any suggestion about the tank size selection, material (glass vs arcylic).I just want to know what I have to worry about when it come to upgrade. Do I have to get a new tank set up a few days in advance prior to the big move? Basicly any advices, suggestion I need to do to prepare for upgrade is helpful.

Go right to a 210, you're gonna get there one day any way... ok more realistically

Consider these options:

Under 4 feet length:

45 bow front

56 Column

40 Breeder (These are great because they're shallower than most tanks which will allow for better light penetration.

54 corner will give you a unique shape and lots of front to "back" space

75 gallon regular give you nice width, same height as a 55 gallon but wider

90 or 110 usally also have a 4ft long foot print but are higher and wider.

Hope this helps

I just did this... upgraded from a 45 to a 58 - to get the 18" front-back space. It was a GREAT decision.

My tank looks more than 100% better. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 237% better.

I'm actually proud of my 58 - I was certainly NOT proud of my 45. Rock stacked against the back wall, almost reaching the front wall in many places... did NOT make me happy.

I also went from U-tube overflow to Reef-Ready with a center overflow. Also a much larger stand, with room for a 40-gallon breeder under it as a sump. I have a thread here somewhere talks all about it. But basically - pick a new location for the tank if at all possible, and get the new one up and running, using some fresh saltwater, and some of the 'changed' water from your current tank. Once it is clear, and the water is good; you can just move stuff on over. I put in a whole new sand bed; just used some sand from the old tank to 'seed' it. I'll try to find the thread, and give you a link to it.

thanx for the advices guys. Im gonna start looking around for a new tank now. If anyone have one for sale let me know. Looking for 45~75 around this range.

In the mean time, Im planning to re aquascape my 45g tomorrow because right now rock are stacked against the back all and the 2 side wall.

This is my current 45g with rock aquascape. All the x are rock. Only the small openning of sand in the middle. Rock stacking against the back and 2 sides are so hard to keep the tank clean and most of all very hard to get water flow into the middle :(

I finally had the rock in my 45 looking decent when I decided to take out the crushed coral which was way too deep or not deep enough (going to put sand in). I'm a rather creative person, but aquascaping is not one of my talents.

Is the 58 still 36x24, but 18 instead of 12?

Re Aquascape the whole tank today. Picture will come tomorrow. One sad thing is a lot of coral died from what i see. Maybe they can recover but not sure.

So far seem like pulsing xenias are all dead. Are they known to be easy to die from transporting between tank and sit outside for too long???

Everything else seem doing fine

My big toadstool leather before the aquascape was not doing good (havent open for a week) now still not open but color is fine seem alive.

How long had you leave them out? I have to ask for experience because my tank has to be moved soon.

Total process took 4rs. Rock was out of water but were damp under wet towel

So far after the move Im missing 1 green emeral crab, 1 firefish and 1 anemone crab

I kept 10gal of old water and replace another 20gal of fresh saltwater.

So far as of this morning

amonia 0.25 or less

Nitrite : 0

pH: 7.8

Nitrate: 0.5~1

All fish are eating normal and look healthy not stress out.
