I was just curious to see if anyone bought either corals, fish, or inverts from Today's Pet in the Mall in Columbia (MD). The only thing that we ever bought from them was a turbo snail, and it's still going strong.

I ask because when we were in the mall last night, we saw that they had a Clown Trigger, a Harliquin Tuskfish, a bunch of mandarins, a Juvenile French angel, and a queen angel and they all looked pretty healthy and active. We're more of a fan of the dedicated LFS that takes the time to QT (like Scales and BRK do) but wondering if we did buy from Today's Pet, would we be looking at our money swirling down the drain?

Thanks.

I have gotten corals from them before. No complain from me. :) They also have randomly good deals on stuff, like ricordea.

Very personal reason I don't buy anything from them. They sell puppies. I don't like supporting a business that has no interest in what happens to the dogs after they leave the store nor any interest in where the puppies came from. It has nothing at all to do with how the fish tanks look.

My advice is: Look at the livestock and use your judgement.

If you know what healthy livestock looks like, go ahead and buy it.

I have fish in my tank I bought at Petco years ago that are still alive.

I agree with the puppies thing. My wife and I have two cats, both from a not-for-profit rescue group in our old home town (Buffalo, NY...GO SABRES!!!). If we wanted to buy a dog, we would look into the many that go without homes first, then probably breeders. I think locking up dogs like that spreads disease and is just freaking unfair to the animal.

Like I said, I only have 1 snail from them (we were in the mall and I remembered) but was curious about their fish. I personally would like to see fish have an actual tank to swim around in (as opposed to a shoebox display tank) and having a QT system is always a plus (kudos to SCALES and BRK).

As for the knowledge....well...that's why we paid to be members

I agree. When I owned a pet shop (in the 1970's) I did not sell dogs or cats, but allowed breeders to post their cards on a bulletin board in the shop.

I recently had my older shelter cat put down at the age of 21. I talked shelters, humane societies, and rescue organizations before selecting my new one. I'd never buy a dog or cat from a retail store environment nor deal with a store that sold them.

Lets try to keep this on topic, that is marine aquarium related reviews of vendors.

However, I too have to agree that puppy-mill dogs should be avoided.

For those who are not familiar with the term 'puppy mill' here is the wikipedia entry on the subject:

If you want to continue the discussion of puppy mills, please take advantage of the off topic forum (Refugium).
