steveoutlaw March 11, 2007 March 11, 2007 I was dipping one of my rocks in boiling water to kill some nuisance polyps and I inhaled some of the fumes. Now I can't stop blowing my nose and my chest feels like it is congested. Has anybody been through this before? Do I need to go to the doctor?
dandy7200 March 11, 2007 March 11, 2007 Probably algae spores. Try taking a benedril and wait a hour, or take it and drive to the e-room and let the medicine kick in while your at the appropriate place. FWIW, I'm not a doctor, just have weird respritory allergies.
flowerseller March 11, 2007 March 11, 2007 I've had extensive training in the floral business and as a result feel qualified to say you should be OK.
steveoutlaw March 11, 2007 Author March 11, 2007 I took a benedryl a while ago. I can't even tell if it did anything. From what I've read on the internet palytoxin can be fatal if it gets into the blood stream.......and I'm sure that inhaling the stuff got it into my bloodstream. I'll give it another hour and if I feel worse........ER here I come.
madmax7774 March 11, 2007 March 11, 2007 I think you'd have to get palytoxin directly into your bloodstream before it becomes and issue, and I don't think that would happen from what you describe. Also, palytoxin symptons begin with numbness from what I have read. Sounds like you not panic unless you experience numbness, loss of sensation or diziness/lightheadedness. Either way, tell someone what you were doing so if you get really bad before you can explain to a doctor, someone has an idea of what you up to.
steveoutlaw March 11, 2007 Author March 11, 2007 Well, as of now I just have a headache, sinus pressure and chest congestion......no numbness yet. I'm going to keep up with the aspirin and benedryl and just wait it out.
trble81 March 11, 2007 March 11, 2007 I just read online and you should have died in a few min. after the affects kicked in....if it was the toxin. As far as absorption into the blood stream, the toxin is a steroid in shape, making it easily absorbed into cells (through their membrane). Again, you probably don't have it so don't worry about it. As far as the discomfort, wait just a bit and if it doesn't subside, go to the ER so you can be looked at. They'll probably give you a Rx for some sort of steriod inhaler to help with the inflamation that's causing all the discomfort (usually given to folks with an asthema attack). My $.02, not a doctor but I've gotten enough education and worked at a hospital. Hope you feel better!

By the way - got one running in my frag tank - and it is QUIET! bob
flowerseller March 12, 2007 March 12, 2007 Steve, We've got a pair of crutches over here you can borrow if you need them. Just kidding man, sounds like you got a nasty cold out of it. 15+ years ago when I was dealing with hairy algae, I could never figure out why my fingers got numb afterwards. Now I know.
