steveoutlaw February 18, 2007 February 18, 2007 Is a Masonry bit the way to go here? I want to put a piece of 1/2" PVC through it.
madmax7774 February 18, 2007 February 18, 2007 I used a cheap wood auger bit. It was $8 I think. It was a 3/4" bit, and I used my drill press. I burned out the drill bit, but it was worth it. It made drilling the rock super easy. I could drill a 6" rock in 10 or 15 seconds, and it made the jobs much more do-able. I can't iamgine trying to do it with a hand-drill. John
Grav February 18, 2007 February 18, 2007 I've used spade bits and regular wood bits. Masonry should work, but I've found that live rock is about as soft as wood.
jamesbuf February 19, 2007 February 19, 2007 Out of curiosity, why did everyone on here drill into their liverock?
madmax7774 February 19, 2007 February 19, 2007 James, You put a rod through the center of a tower of rock to keep it from falling over. You saw the two towers I had when you here this morning. John
jamesbuf February 19, 2007 February 19, 2007 Oh. I figured you just had them balanced. I've always just built up from a solid base, never realized people drilled their LR to aquascape.
flowerseller February 19, 2007 February 19, 2007 A good portion of my reef is zip tied together to keep it from falling.
Ingo February 19, 2007 February 19, 2007 Posted Today, 07:15 PM Out of curiosity, why did everyone on here drill into their liverock? To easier attach cable ties without being seen.
kngfisher February 20, 2007 February 20, 2007 (edited) one could also drill frag stations into the rock if one wanted...could then just place frag plugs in the rock intead of in sand bed or on shelves...wish I thought of that when I was setting my tank up..... Edited February 20, 2007 by kngfisher
