Hair algae advice

Recommended Posts

Hello. Getting some hair algae. Usually clean up crew is doing s good job and keeping phosphate low. Best way to remove? I heard removing manual and adding in some spot hydrogen peroxide treatment. But want to make sure I keep it safe.

Manual removal is fine, if it keeps coming back then use hydrogen peroxide.  IME, tangs like to pick when the algae is not grown out, but your mileage will vary with all fish….

good luck,

Darren

Hydrogen peroxide can work as a dose too, but things can be sensitive to, so it's not an ideal situation.  Fluconazole seems to pretty reliably remove it (and some other plants) and has a shorter list of potential pitfalls, though you have to get it as a fish specialty sort of product and dose accordingly.

If you see the algae in profile, does it for or fan at all from the strands?  Is there a blueish metallic tint to some strands?  In either case it could be a kind of bryopsis and that could explain its persistence.
