Calcium Supplements Derived From Sea Coral
ReefMon replied to Gatortailale's topic in General Discussion
I cant see how dead coral is good for anyone... When ever I see ad's for Coral calcium, I see someone destroying a vibrant reef, to bleach & crush coral for vitamins, and THAT makes me sick -
In the summer the local water supplies run Chloramine instead of chlorine in the systems. My understanding is the chlorimine passes through your RO/DI and is broken down to ammonia unlike the chlorine that is absorbed by your carbon pre-filters. The only way to eliminate this ammonia is running a ammonia removal unit (needs recharging with a brine solution) or a mixed bed ammonia DI unit. http://www.spectrapure.com/St_replac_p4.htm#ammo-ro-di

Alberto, Please let us know how these burn in, as I have no more room for my corals to grow and am thinking of replacing my Iwasiki's with them. -
Looking for water storage container. Where??

Once you go over the 55 gal mark, you're gonna get into big bucks. I know Chris Green used an old beat up 120 gal tank to use as a mixing/holding tank for his 450, had it plumbed to do automatic water changes. Just an idea, might be cheaper than a speciality vessel. -
WOW, thank god you came out OK! . Just goes to show how you really need to be careful when messing around with mother nature! Take it easy this weekend, keep your hands out your tank. Do yourself a favor and order some Aqua Gloves http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=6&pCatId=3871 and USE them in the future! Now you've been exposed, another contact could be much more serious (as if that wasn't bad enough!)

IMO your nano should win Tank of the Year! Congratulations on the Great job! Glenn R

Tony, Do I understand this right, 1 run of 14/3 will tie into 2 15 A. breakers? Is 14/3 romex 3 power feeds (1 common & 2 hot's, plus a ground) or 2 powers & 1 ground? Thanks!

I've seen those lighting tracks at a hydroponic shops/sites. Let us know what you find! Glenn R

I was looking forward to joining, but it now appears that I'll be munching down on Yaya gumbo in the Big Easy... oh well :p Oh, and how can you call it a pizza with out anchovies?

Most all the NoVa HD's carry SouthDown, but with all the snow this winter their stock is running short. I'd call Merrifield and Sterling as they are the largest stores in the region. HTH Glenn

I'll go for a quarter or half a block!

Good deal! Looks to me like they did this instead of the CD that was supposed to supplement the Corals of the World book set. Only issue is allot of folks paid for the cd and it never shipped.

Yea, the evaporated water is fresh, but their is allot of salt in the air from bubbles and splashing and it will attack the fans faster. Ever parked your car at the beach and seen how much salt is deposited on it from the wind? As for a canopy exhaust system, I've designed a high volume ventilation system, all I need now is the time to put it together to see how it works.... stay tuned

You can try Thomas Summerville, Fergesons for locally, but they prefer to sell to the trade. Mail/Internet you can try macmastercarr.com or USPlastics.com

MS has the 8 lbs jugs for $28. I just inquired with then about getting larger sizes and was told they can get 50lbs for $70 something, and could have it the next week. I'm waiting to see what price TRT can do before I order, and will let everyone know. HTH Glenn R

Just happened. I'm assuming all or most of the corals spawned later in the night, as the clam has spawned a few times with no lingering effects on the tank, unlike the milky water I found in the morning. Highly unlikely.... All is now well with the tank. I think the fact that I did almost 100 gals of water changes in 36 hours kept the O2 levels up and pulled most of the organics out before they had a chance to decompose and toxicfy the water.

FWIW, I've had great sucess with 2-250W Iwasakisi's and 2 50/50 & 2 03 110W VHO's that I run on my 90. I get great growth and fantastic coloring out of them. My preferance is the PFO halide (not MV) ballasts and the Icecap 660's. The Icecaps are electronic, so your electrisity useage is a bit less than a tar VHO ballast, plus you should get a longer life from your bulbs with the electrronic ballast. HTH Glenn R

Last night my Derasa decided to spawn again. I pulled some samples and looked at them in a microscope and I believe they were eggs, pretty cool, eh? Well, I ran all the water tests to see if anything was amiss, causing the clam to stress and everything checked out normal. (180 reef, evening pH 8.28, alk 10½ dkh, sg 1.026, temp 81, no3 none detected) Oh well.... So, I woke up this morning to a rather strong (make that REALLY strong) stench.... Went down stairs and looked into the dark tank with my flashlight, to see the water was totally white! Looked in the sump, and this is what I had: Looks like the clam was the beginning of a massive spawning event..... Did a 35 gal water change, added a poly filter and replaced the carbon, the water looked a good bit better. 4 hours later, the tank looks milky white again, but everything seems to be looking good, the fish are super active (hunting for free food) and the corals look normal, other than just a bit of slime. My skimmer is totally shut down, no foam what so ever, and the tank still smells like ___! My plan is to keep the temp down in the 78 deg range (normal this time of year is 78-82) to keep the O2 levels up, and to do another 35g water change later tonight plus keep running fresh carbon. Oh well, time will tell what the outcome will be. Happy Reefing! Glenn R
