Unfortantly I'm only getting to go to Oahu, Ocean Rider is on the big Island. If I had my way, I'd be skipping Oahu, and going directly to Maui, Kauai & Hawaii. I'm planning a couple of days at the Wakikii Aquarium, figure if I bother them long enough, maybe I'll get some frags :p

Just learned that the wife has to attend a trade show in Waikiki, and according to our deal, get to I go too! :D :p :D I't been over 18 years since I was there last, any one have any reef related must do's other that The Waikiki Aquarium and snorkeling & diving at Hanauma Bay?

Hi Sam, Putting any tang in a tank that small is not an option. I thought you were joking! The reddish slime is cyanobacteria, a sure sign of high nutrients. Cut your feeding in half, then half again. Along with manual removal, decreased photo period (cut it by 25%), increased water changes you will see improvement. An additional powerhead running low in the water column will also help. Additionally you could try either a Sally Lightfoot or Mithrax (emerald) crab, but IMO it's a mater of too much nutrient input and not enough export. The blue tuxedo urchin is probably your best option. Please, do not put a tang into your tank. Tangs are open water grazers, in the wild they can cover several acres in a day. Sometimes I feel a 6' tank is much too confining for them. HTH Glenn R

Changing the substrate - coral gravel to sand
ReefMon replied to OUsnakebyte's topic in General Discussion
It's 2 different types of biological filtration systems: Wet Dry's & Bio balls host aerobic bacteria and that gives you a partial cycle: Ammonia-Nitrites=nitrates. This is still the best solution for systems without natural filtration, the down side is you must do waterchanges to remove the nitrates. Live Rock and DSB's host anaerobic bacteria, this gives you the complete cycle: Ammonia-Nitrites-Nitrates=nitrogen gas. The beauty of this is the final product is a gas that naturally escapes the system. -
Changing the substrate - coral gravel to sand

You said the magic words... Bio Balls = nitrate factory My guess is if you pull the Bio Balls your problems will go away. You'd want to pull them slowly, a few at a time so the live rock & gravel can slowly ramp up to provide all your biological filtration. HTH Glenn R -
Your tank is absolutely awesome! Congratulations, Robie!

I'll drop by with a used Iwasaki for you, but something tells me you aint gonna like the color, but your corals are gonna love the PAR.

The best affordable meter IMO is the Pinpoint: http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchan....inpoint HTH Glenn R

Along with everything else said, I'd recommend soaking your food in Selcon. http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchan....=SELCON

Do you do them? Yes! The solution to pollution is dilution.... How often? Once a month or so, depending on how the tanks are looking. How much water do you change? 40+/- gal on my 180 Do you mix up a lot of saltwater and store it somewhere? I keep 40-50 gals of fresh salt water mixing at all times. (plus try to have an extra 40-50 of fresh RO/DI) What do you store it in? 45 gal rubbermaid bruit trash cans and a 55 gal drum. What is your method for getting the old water out of the aquarium, and the new water in? I use a Mag 24 to pump the water out of the tank and then back into the tank. Only takes me 20 minutes to do a 50 gal change.

Hate to tell you but it looks definitely like a majano. Do yourself a favor and get rid of it ASAP as it can multiply into a few thousand in no time at all.

We'd need some more info on your tank to help. IMO, ick is caused by stress, stress can be from inappropriate/aggressive tank mates, overstocking, water quality issues, etc. The more info we have on your set-up, the easier for us to pinpoint any issues. What are the other occupants of the tank? Was anything added after the neon goby? Amount of live rock? Skimmer? Lighting? Water flow? specific gravity and method of testing? min & max temp's? Ammonia? Nitrates? Nitrites? Amount and what type of food being feed? Any other additives added to the system? If it's aggression from other fishes, you may want to do a quick rearrangement of your live rock, as it will mix up their territories lessening any territorial squabbles. Although theres no proof that garlic works, I believe it causes the fish to secrete more slime, making it harder for the Ick to attach to the fish. Heavy feeding also seems to help. As for a Q tank, a 10 gal with a aquaclear type hang on filter, a small power head, light & heater is all you need, as long as you do regular water changes (like twice a day if needed, and I always use water from an established tank). But, catching a sick fish in a reef is usually more stressful than than helpful. Hope this helps Glenn R

Hats off to Dominion Power! Our power was restored around 6:00 last night after they sent an army of tree clearing workers and equipment to clean up the carnage.
-
Well I finally figured out the gas consumption of my generator is 10 gal per day...

Just got a call from David Oh. He just lost power and has no back up plan for his tanks. I suggested Kmart and Wal-Mart for battery powered air pumps on inverters. If someone in the MD area has anything to help him out with please call him at 301-445-3054! Glenn

Looking at the extensive tree damage in my area, it's going to be days before we get our power restored. Got the tanks, refrigerators (and the neighbors) lights and radio hooked up to the generator. Just having a hard time explaining to the wife she can’t use her hair dryer. :p We are under orders to boil all tap water, but I have 30 gal on hand to drink.
-
our power went out at 6:30 and is still out. Michael and Tony lost power around 4. We hope everyone's safe and secure tonight.

If your power goes out and you have no back up, or it's out longer than your able to manage please contact me or one of the other officers and we'll see if we can assist you. (IE your powers out and mine is fine, I'm more than happy to let you use my generator) I can be reached at 703298*4000 cell or 703759*3021 h or email the officers at info@wamas.org Good luck to all, thank god that we don't have the cat 5 storm we were looking at earlier this week! Please do get a second opinion on your pH test before you start adding a witches brew of chemicals to your tank. You stated earlier that your fresh mixed IO was 7.7 and I've never seen it run less than 8.2-8.4. As for additives, C-Balance/B-Ionic (the liquid types) are IMO much better as it makes it very difficult to upset the ionic balance of your water. HTH Glenn R
-
Welcome to the board! Personally I don't put much faith in the chemical pH tests. It would be difficult to have fresh IO with a pH that low. Where are you located, maybe someone is in your area that can check it with a pH meter. Happy Reefing! Glenn R

I was just in the Tysons Radioshack, they had 1 300w inverter left. Reports are there are no generators left at any of the HD's and Lowes in the area. BTW, if you reload this page you'll get the latest 5 day projected storm path directly from NOAA-NHC.
