  7. Let me refresh everyone's minds --- Here's all the details!!! On Saturday, April 14th 2007 we will hold our annual spring event. This is an all day event featuring 3 speakers, food, vendors, large raffle, etc. This year our speakers will include: Biography: I am a natural historian of sea anemones with strong interests in coral reefs, the deep seas, and high latitudes. A convergence of my research activities on the biogeography, evolution, systematics, reproduction, and symbioses of these animals and their relatives led me to build a database through which I could interrelate seemingly disparate aspects of biology. As I began to locate what is known (and, by implication, to identify what is left to be discovered), I became increasingly concerned with limits to knowledge, and how precision and accuracy must be considered as part of what is known and what is not. Biography courtesy of http://cmbc.ucsd.edu/about/DaphneFautin.doc Frank Burr, owner of The Coral Oasis (Coral Farm) and Tropical Reef Oasis (Retail Store). Over 20 years Reef experience beginning with a homebuilt 60 gallon mini-reef and progressing to multiple personal tanks, a coral propagation farm specializing in SPS and exotic Zoos with over 900 gallons of propagation tanks as well as a coral and fish quarantine system and a Reef specialty store with over 1000 gallons of display and show tanks. Frank is conducting ongoing research on improving quarantine methods and eradication of corals pests as well as creating and maintaining small low or no-maintenance self-sustained reef biospheres. Author of: Quarantine for Reef Systems. Visit Frank's website: www.thecoraloasis.com "Quarantine for Reef Systems" In today's ever-popular hobby, we are finding more and more new varieties of pests and pathogens coming in on wild and aquacultured livestock imported from overseas. Once these pests have a chance to enter the captive systems of the commercial and private hobbyist, they spread rampantly, endangering the healthy and successful advancement of our hobby. This talk will cover aspects of identifying pests and pathogens present on incoming livestock and methods and procedures of quarantining and eradicating these pests before they get a chance to enter our captive ecosystems. Biography courtesy of http://www.theimac.org/fburr.htm My name is Jake Adams and I currently live in Columbia, South Carolina. I am a junior at the University of South Carolina where I am going to school to major in Marine Science. My research interest is the physiology of stony corals and I am currently working on flow related effects on photosynthesis and respiration of Pocillopora damicornis. I have been passionate about aquariums since I was 14, when my family got its first goldfish tank. As my fascination grew so did the number of aquariums and it was all downhill from there. I quickly became interested in a variety of freshwater fish groups such as bettas, african cichlids, discus, dwarf cichlids, plecos, planted tanks and rainbowfish. It was a few months before I set up my first marine tank. At the time, I was keeping a Monodactylus argenteus in my african cichlid tank and I thought it was so cool that I was able to put him in my salty tank. I remember how mad I was when the fishstore squooshed the coral (aiptasia) that was on the first piece of live rock I bought. Shortly after developing some saltwater aquarium skills I began to keep a 75 gallon reef tank and an octopus. It was not long thereafter that I began to work in aquarium and pet shops. Since then I have worked at a variety of pet and aquarium shops and I started managing my first fish store as soon as I was out of high school, at the tender young age of 17. I co-managed 2 primarily reef aquarium stores in Denver for a yr and then I moved to Marietta GA to manage Marine Fish, which at the time, was one of the nicest marine and reef aquarium stores around. I was especially skilled at procuring the rarest of fish and corals. Apart from coral research, nowadays I stay busy maintaining my own aquariums as well as the Seawater Culture Facility at school and I am an active member of the local reef club.
