  1. I let zefrank use some of my footage, and you'll never guess what they ended with... (some of my stuff throughout, but watch 3:50-4:00 to see this part again...I'm the only other person on the voice track!) You should check out more of his videos, there is some funny stuff there.
  2. I used pine. Same pine I used to build stands. Plenty of strength. I'm not worried.
  3. I used 2x8s, attached on the inside with angle brackets and screws. You can see the progress in my build thread: http://wamas.org/forums/topic/27277-the-tooths-29g-oak-mantis-shrimp-build/page__hl__build Here is the final product:
  4. I don't like it either, but I think in threads like this people have a tendency to exaggerate it. In my opinion, the prices have been remarkably stable given the amount of livestock they are going through. I can usually estimate the price fairly well, and the price is usually the same whether I show up in a suit or cut-offs. (some would say because they know me, and there may be something there). If you only have 5 fish for sale, it's a lot easier to have consistent prices from day to day, etc. These guys go through so much, they can't mark them or be perfectly consistent. Yes, it happens, but not to the extent you would think by reading this thread. And if anyone is thinking Roozen's is the only place whose prices fluctuate to some extent based on people's moods, time of day, the weather, etc...that is nonsense.
  5. Yes, you missed it. It is in the back. They have more livestock selection than anyone else.
  6. Here we go again! Seriously, you should just go out and check it out yourself. Make up your own mind.
  7. Super aggressive eaters. Chromis, hippo, a sohal pig, clowns, wrasse...that pic was from years ago and I don't have him anymore, but he would aggressively come up and compete for food at feeding time like everyone else after he was properly trained.
  8. I've tried twice. Both wild caught, cheap mandarins from the LFS. Both times it was relatively simple (and cheap) to get them eating PE mysis. Same food I feed everyone else. I think the "common wisdom" that you need them eating pods is nonsense, and makes people not even try. I agree the chances are probably about the same getting a wild or tank raised one to eat frozen. I'd call the odds "good". I find that many who call the odds "bad" have not tried. Don't be discouraged, give it a try. Here is a pic of one of mine (not the one in the 2.5G, but looks the same).
  9. Maybe there was too much malamine in the acrylic. Seriously, though...although hard to see, it looked to me like it failed from the top to the bottom. Like a seam opening up, maybe? I wonder if any of the "acrylic glass" pieces actually broke.
  10. That is absolutely incorrect. Get it eating prepared food like any other fish. I've watched one grow, and grow, and grow in a 2.5 G tank.
  11. Christmas is about 12 days out...time to pull out the traditional thread! Happy Holidays again WAMAS.
  12. Is there a petition to support the ban? I like this quote: "but many people within the aquarium industry are pushing for a managed fishery" That's like saying many wolves are pushing for more access to chicken coops.
  13. I'm pretty sure gamma radiation (what they use on food) is going to penetrate rock. Especially the porous stuff we use. You need lead to stop it.
  14. You could use radiation to sterilize the rock if you have the means (like they do with some of the food we eat).
  15. I'm glad my pain amuses you all. I'm amused by the number of hits: 14,000 hits for that multi-trick video: But, when I put only that single trick in a video, I get 198,000:
  16. Here is a video I made of my former chiragra doing some funny things:
  17. I saw it, it was pretty cool. NatGeo seems to be "into" mantis shrimp these days. They contacted me a while back regarding using some of my footage in a different special they are making that has not aired yet. I got word from them today that my stuff made it into the final cut.
  18. Could you set it up so the water coming into the kalk stirrer is dripping into there through air (the tube not submerged)? Then it would not be able to back-siphon into your reservoir in the event of a check valve failure. That is how I do my ATO.
  19. Right, In his case, a siphon break would be a good back up. For me, I only use the pump for ATO, so there is no possibility of a siphon. I'm not sure I understand his exact set-up, but if he is pumping kalk-juice or salt water through the check valve (which I am not), I would expect that would cause the check valve to fail faster. Could explain why mine has lasted so long.
