  1. Likewise in for a skimmer building party. I need to upgrade my current setup.... I will also keep an eye on any news. Cheers Mike
  2. I can likely help - depends on if I can get access to a car, but I'm almost positive I can. Let me know if you still need me. You can email me at henleym@si.edu Cheers Mike
  3. Does anyone know if sixlines are compatible with mandarins? I thought I remember hearing reports of someone's sixline harrassing and killing their mandarin...
  4. 75 gallon mixed reef (LPS, SPS, Clams, Anemones, etc.) Copperband Butterfly Midas Blenny Pair GSM Clowns Yellow Tang *had a Blue hippo tang and flameback angel, but I lost them in the move last month...
  5. Yeah, I was just worried about heat - to tell you the truth, I totally for got about UV... Ha! How quick we are to assume that this a guy entering this male-dominated hobby! I'm actually getting a female addicted!!! ]]]bdwn
  6. Hey Phil - is that split-happy BTA of yours cloning itself again...? Miller - how far above the brace is your fixture mounted? Is it in a canopy? I guess I should mention that I know the brace will cast a shadow, but this tank is not for SPS (it's not even my tank - a friend's). It's a new tank that will be mostly soft and a few LPS. But, IME, if you stick with this hobby long enough, you will eventually want MH. Just trying to save a few bucks up front... Then, if the SPS bug bites, just get a second fixture and call it a day... Later Mike
  7. If I mount a single 250 watt HQI MH pendant over the center of a 65 gallon tank's plastic center brace, say, 8-10 inches above the brace, do you think it will melt it? This would be suspended from the ceiling, not mounted in a canopy... Cheers Mike
  8. I started using it about a week, maybe week and a half ago. I drip about four tspns in ~two gallons of water each day (yeah, I need to get that auto-topoff going...). So far, I have not had any problems. All seems well. I have montis, digis, millies, and other assorted acros. Sorry to hear about the losses - hope all else goes well. Mike
  9. Well, I thought it was a 55watt fixture, but looking at that page Jake posted, it looks like the only 33" bulbs are 96 watt...? It's been a long time since I used this unit... I wonder if this is more trouble than it's worth.....
  10. Can you snap a pic?
  11. Okay, so I have an older 36" Custom SeaLife PC fixture that I would like to get running again. Problem is... CSL is no longer in business. Any ideas where I can get a new bulb and end cap for this fixture? The bulb is a straight pin and is rather long. I think it is 33 or 35 inches - somewhere in that range - a far cry from the 22" bulbs I see on Hellolights. It fits completely across the 36" fixture. Any ideas? Cheers Mike
  12. Mike - 1/2 bag I can be there pretty much any time between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday to split with whomever is there. Cheers Mike
  13. Are we by chance gonna divide this up at the fall meeting...? Or earlier...?
  14. I'll take 1/2 bag! Cheers Mike
  15. So, you would not recommend using this product in a Kalk reactor, right? Just in a Kalk drip...? Also, can you add it quickly, or does it need to sit first and then be dripped?
  16. One Ivory (MI) Large for me!!! Hope I'm not too late!!! Cheers Mike
  17. Oh yeah, they definitely go for pods on the rocks too...
  18. I had both a longnose and a CB in my 75 before I moved here to DC. Back then, I had LPS, softies, and anemones in my tank. Both were model citizens. They both "sampled" the feeding tentacles on my open brain once or twice, but then they let up and never bothered it again. Just before I moved, I was trying to lighten the load a bit, so I gave the longnose back to the owners of the lfs I was working at (knew they were a great home...). The CB died during the move here from Okla. :( The CB only ever went after the feather dusters. I think this is pretty well expected of them. I have read several other reports of this. I also found the best way to get them to eat is to put an open mussel in a clip. They will eventually notice it. Then I feed the other foods while the mussel is up there. This seems to get them to associate the other "stuff" floating around as food too.... Anyway, it worked for me. I have been wanting another one, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Also, while I have read that they won't bother clams, I did not have any clams when I had a CB. Anyone have luck with CB's and clams (I have three now...)? I think they will be okay, but firsthand experience is always nice... Cheers Mike
  19. Shhhh!!! It's for my desk at work... She'll never know!!! :p
  20. I have recently come into a kalk reactor, so I'd be up for making the calcium reactor. If it's $50-$100 for just the reactor, I could do that. I can just order the CO2 bottle, solenoid, etc. at a later date, right? I vote for the Sept 11 date - out of town the others. Cheers Mike
  21. Sent you an email....
  22. Careful, with good lighting it will get gigantic... just plan ahead....
  23. Got tons that I am just gonna flush unless someone wants it. Free to anyone - all you have to do is come pick it up. PM for directions/times I'll be here. Cheers Mike
  24. That's a good question, and I don't know. Anyone else? I have been considering moving my pair of GSMs (got a huge female and a male) to my 29 b/c I was considering a pair of true percs, but I don't know if they will be happy in a 29 (they are in my 75 right now...). Currently the female hosts in the long tentacle and the male hosts in the carpet that he shares with an anem crab. I'd also hate to take them from their 'homes.'
  25. Regardless, you shouldn't need to "test" it with a damsel, and we're not only concerned with ammonia here. As Houshan mentioned earlier - that's what test kits are for... Ammo, nirite, nitrates, pH, etc. As Michael said, you should see an ammonia spike first (especially if you are using uncured rock), followed by a drop in the ammonia and a corresponding increase in nitrites. As the rites go down the rates tend to go up. Then, I'd start doing water changes. Now, I wouldn't go adding a $60 dwarf angel as soon as you are cycled, and some fish, IMO, should not be added until your tank has been established for ~6 months. But, you should also start planning your stocking list. Start with the cheaper, possibly hardier fish you want and go slowly - slow is the key here. Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank. However, you do not have to get a damsel if you are not going to want it 6, 8, 10 months down the road - they can be agressive little fish. That's another thing - plan for temperment/agressiveness.... don't start with that yeller tang - he'll likely fin whoever you add next, and next, and next, etc.... Gobies, blennies, grammas, etc. can also start your tank off right and be less to deal with later. But if you really like that blue damsel, have at it.... I dunno where I heard it, but I once heard someone say/type that they recommend one damsel for every fifty gallons of water... any comments? True, not true?
