  1. I've been dosing live phyto from reef nutrition at 1/4 dose for a few days now, got many suggestions saying that it would help with pod population. I'll grab a pile of rubble from a store tomorrow and see if I can setup a pod haven. Anything specific I should keep in mind? Thank you for the suggestion
  2. Yup, trying to anyhow. It is about 10 months old at this point I think? I believe I set it up mid January.
  3. Interesting, its a fully submersible algae scrubber? I'll have to look it up a bit. Yeah so far hasn't worked out for me. I didn't scrub the side and back for a week and still didn't see much. I've tried seeding tigger pods a bunch but no luck so far. So just a big mound of rubble in the corner of my tank will do? maybe surrounding a shower poufs like you mentioned?
  4. Essentially, my sump is too small for a refugium so I was hoping to find alternate ways to grow pods. So far people have recommended separate culture tank or rock rubble/marine pure in the sump. What does everyone recommend for pods?
  5. I've been getting this blackened particle along with a rotting smell in my biopellet reactor ever since I cleaned it out a while ago. I tried to look it up and most people seemed to think it was a slow flow causing a build up of hydrogen sulfide. I slowly increased flow to max over a few weeks and the smell definitely went away, but the black particle is still all over the reactor and nitrates have not been going down. Any tips on what might be causing this and how to fix it?
  6. Yeah thats where i found the chemipure recommendations. I didn't think to check the totms, I'll try it thank you for the advice
  7. No no I appreciate the tips, I'm still fairly new to everything so all tips are appreciated. So I don't really mind increasing the budget if needed for a reef, $200 was just something I came up with to not overspend on random things like I tend to do. What would you recommend instead for filtration? The mechanical filter/ chemipure/ purigen thing was just something I found online as a top that people recommended would work well. I'm assuming you mean getting a skimmer?
  8. Yeah should've clarified. I was thinking rock flowers or maybe a mini carpet. If I try anemones maybe it would smarter to get more known brands for the reliability? Thank you for the tip
  9. Thanks for the tip! Do you think that light will be strong enough for anemones?
  10. I got my hands on a fluval spec V and want to turn it into a budget (100~200$) mini reef. At first I wanted to keep some anemones and inverts but I'm not sure if thats possible in a "budget" setting. If not, some really simple softies would be interesting as well. So the plan is no skimmer(a lot of water changes), replace sponge with filter floss and chemipure + purigen, upgrade light and purchase a power head. For lighting, I'm seeing a lot of recommendations for the nanobox mini, current, and finnex lighting. It can't hang more than like 7~ inches above the tank since it's under a shelf and it's next to my work area, so I would prefer it to be lower so it doesn't shine directly into my eyes. I was leaning towards finding used lighting so it doesn't eat into the budget, but if I ended up picking a new light, what would you recommend for keeping anemones or keeping softies? For the power head, I'm not sure what to look for. Seems like there's a million power heads around the $20 mark on amazon, all around the 200~500GPH range. Is there a brand I should look for and is a powerhead even necessary in a tank this small with the pump running constantly? And for filtration, the floss + chemipure + purigen is what I read a lot on the nano tank forums when I was looking in to starting this. If there is a better method or other tips, please let me know! Thanks.
  11. Thank you for the tip, I wasn't too worried, more just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything incredibly stupid.
  12. Is there a spot open? I'd love to try this time!
  13. Do you have a recommendation on how long? Also just a light cleaning of the bucket good? Or should I go ahead and scrub it down with some sort of cleaning product?
  14. I have some dead rock I got from a friend a few months ago in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. It had some zoanthids on the rock and I haven't opened the lid since I got them. Should I be worried about handling and reusing this rock? I heard zoanthids also carry palytoxin, does it stick around for this long? Or would I not have to worry about this at all at this point?
  15. http://www.thatpetplace.com/Rhodactis-sanctithomae-st-thomas-mushroom-252885 Is this the right kind? I've never heard of ST Thomas mushrooms before so i was doing some research on it. From what I've seen online the vesicles look a lot more jagged and have smooth surface between them. Can't say I have much of an eye for distinguishing mushroom corals yet tho, hopefully someone knows what is going on with it.
  16. I've had this Yuma for a while and I was confused about why my yuma looked different than other ones I see. The ones I've seen or found online seem to have much smaller "circular bits" compared this.
  17. Okay. At least it sounds like it's not in a huge trouble or anything. Hopefully it recovers from whatever is causing it problems soon
  18. Will the anemone move across gaps in rocks or across sand? I was just worried because he looks smaller and faded in color over months without him moving at all
  19. I have a RBTA that currently is losing color and fading like this https://i.imgur.com/V5iGR6M.jpg This has been the case ever since the rock the RBTA is on tipped over and changes the location of the anemone. I am guessing it is not happy with the amount of lighting or flow in his current location and I want to move it but it won't budge from the crevice it is in. Is there any way to coax it into moving out of his spot and into the main rockwork? Or could it be a completely different issue? It has not really moved during this period.
  20. How often did you clean out your filter socks?
  21. I have about 80 pounds of live rock, I don't know what other form of bio filtration you mean, but I don't have any other forms of filtration besides what I have listed. I had the chromis for about 2 months now I think. I started with 7 chromis with 2 feedings daily, was told that I am feeding too often by my LFS and changed my schedule to once a day and lost 1 chromis per day until I switched back to 2 feedings a day. Then I've had the same 5 for at least 3 weeks at this point. But yeah I was actually worried about getting chromis at first because of the whole infighting thing but it didn't happen much so it's been good so far. I got 7 expecting a few deaths and got less than I was expecting honestly.
  22. Hmm okay. At this rate they would definitely be one of the last fish added unless something died. Did you have them together at one point?
  23. Thanks for the tip! I always wanted an angel but was worried about them nipping at coral. Do you have any tips on what might deter it from doing so?
  24. Yeah the anthias thing was if I had gone with them instead of chromis or something, not something I want to try now. I do feed 2 times a day in smaller portions tho. And I usually get my fish from reef eScape and they have good fish most of the time. I'll have to do some more research on leopards though, I heard they're very very hard to keep
