  1. side note: my wife just found out that i was getting back into the hobby again and she didnt freak out. Huge win!
  2. im in the planning stages of my "get back in the hobby" tank. It will have eels(probably multiple species) and im trying to figure out what fish(if any) i will add to it. I had a snowflake eel before with a fuzzy dwarf lionfish and i really liked that they both ate every 3-4 days. Are there any other fish that are good having their feedings that far apart?
  3. Just wondering how often you feed your lion fish. I have a fuzzy dwarf and have had it about 3 weeks now. I have been feeding every 3-4 days( same time as my eel) but wondering if he should be feed more often. When I feed, he eats a lot, stomach gets pretty large.
  4. i recently set up a 2nd tank, its 100g and will be FOWLR only. it has been running for a week now, but i didnt do any water tests until today. in hindsight, i realize that wasnt the smartest thing to do, i just had so many other things with the tank to do after the initial set up, that testing got pushed back until all else was finished. I have approx 50 pounds of LR with about 40 of that coming from the member i bought the tank from. He had it cycling in his setup for about 6 months prior. I also used half of his sand and half of new ocean direct live sand. i was hoping that by using mostly cured LR and half of his sand that i would drastically cut down the cycle time. So i tested for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and phos. today and here are the results: ammonia-0- Api test kit nitrites-0- api test kit nitrates- 1.5- red sea test kit phosphate- 5+- ted sea test kit obviously im worried about the high phosphate, im assuming its coming from some die off from his LR, they were keep in 5 gallon buckets full of tank water for approx 24 hours prior to me putting in my set up and the same for the sand. Plus, the 10 pounds or so that wasnt from him, was just dry rock that i took out of my last set up when upgrading tanks. has been dry for about 7 months. With 0 ammonia and nitrites, but 1.5 nitrates, is it possible that i missed the initial spike during that first week. I didnt feed the tank during that time, because i knew there would be some die off and thought that would jump start it. I guess my question is, is it normal for phosphate to be that high this early and should i do multiple WC this week to bring it down, or would that hurt the cycling process as a whole.
  5. How hard is it to drill acrylic. This is my first experience with an acrylic tank
  6. The drain pipe is 1 inch. I can use gutter guard, but this tank is for an eel and he will have access to this pipe, so maybe I can just zip tie the ends together to keep him from escaping. Are there any advantages between the two options you created? Tank is 100 g 36x36x18
  7. the drains wont fit through the two holes, the pipes are too far apart, im not planning on using filter socks anyway so i didnt think that was a big deal. i thought putting a gate valve on the return line would put back pressure on the pump and would lead to pump failure down the line, am i wrong about that? i played around with it a little more last night and finally got the water level to raise over the cage approx 3-4 inches and to also stabilize in the sump. Now the only problem is that its incredibly loud. Pretty much all the noise is coming from the "air" drain. If i try to open the drain a little then the back level drops, if i close the drain a little then the sump runs dry. Its really frustrating. considering just replacing it with a durso stand pipe. Any suggestions?
  8. in the pic of the sump, i was told the left pipe is for air, which is supposed to help with the drain. when i run it, water comes out, not alot, but a trickle to a low flow and it makes it really loud. i tried to attach a piece to extend it below the water level and it helped tremendously with the noise from the sump. Still had large bubbles every 30 seconds or so though and a noisy drain up top
  9. Im currently setting up a tank that i bought from another member on the forum and am having issues with the plumbing. here are a couple pics of how it looks. i think the issue is that i cant get the water level in the overflow to rise over the black drain cover. it gets about half way up and thats it. i have the ability to close the drain little by little but when the drain closes enough to make the water in the overflow rise, the return pump pumps all the water out of the sump. If i open it back up just a little to keep that from happening, the water level lowers on the black drain. Also, large bubbles shoot through my drain pipe approx every 20-30 seconds. Is that normal, something to be concerned with. I have a 180 that has durso stand pipes and it works well, but ive never had anything with this type of plumbing. Hopefully its something easy that im just dumb enough not to know. Please help because i am lost.
  10. I used it a couple months ago, follow directions exactly, it was gone in 2 days, followed by a large water change
  11. i need to pick up some live sand tomorrow and was wondering if you had any in stock currently. Im looking for 80-120 pounds.
  12. the problem is that you have to catch him when hes there. He was switched to online only now. He is very nice and if hes there, will let you in and buy, but its hard to plan to go not knowing if hes going to be there. But...Indeed, he has very nice healthy fish. Some of his display fish are the best i've seen
  13. ok, thats mostly what ive read. a few people have claimed that overtime, the acrylic can look hazy because of the "buildup" of micro scratches. Nobody has actually said it had happened, just claimed it would. Thats why i wanted to check with people on here that have actually used it long term. Thank you
  14. im about to set up my first acrylic tank and was looking into what to clean it with. i found a lot about using magic erasers, mostly positive results. My concern is with long term use. Can anybody let me know if they have used this method long term without any negative results?
  15. I found a thread about receipts from sponsors and getting tickets, is that still in play also?
  16. how much are raffle tickets? i want to know how much cash to bring
  17. just wondering if anybody on here uses this controller and how it works for you. Ive been struggling to figure out what controller to get and recently came across this. Any feedback would help if you have it.
  18. I just had my first experience with cyano. I used chemi-clean and it was completely gone in 2 days, it's been a week now and now sign of it returning yet
  19. Ive been considering getting a controller for a while now and have been looking for any members that may be looking to sell one. If nothing comes along soon, i will probably just buy new. I've been looking at the RKL or RKE (or RKL+) but want to hear from people that have them or have used them in the past. What are some of the pros and cons that you experienced? Thank you in advance
  20. I'm sure others will have more experienced questions than me, but my first question is how long was the tank running before "fully cycled". what type of water are you topping off with. A common mistake for beginners is to use salt water, which causes a spike in salinity and in a tank that small, probably wouldn't take too long. My other advice would be to really inspect your fish before buying, any signs of damage is a concern. I'm sure others will chime in also, just thought I would start it off. Good luck and keep us posted
