  1. so i switched from a 75g to a 180g about 6 weeks ago. i had a few smaller pieces of LR from my old set up that i didnt put in the new one. Now im looking to use one of the pieces in my display, but noticed that it has started to turn green. I took the rock from the old tank and just put in a 5 gallon bucket, no water or anything and it has dried for 6 weeks or so. The piece that i want to use is about 1 inch thick, 3 inches wide and 6 inches long. Should i be worried about the green that has started to pop up on it? I didnt think algae would grow on it if it was out of water?
  2. anybody else? i know a lot of you feed your corals something. let me know what you've tried and what you like best. im not looking to feed 5 different types of food. just one all around food that will benefit the coral
  3. anyway i can meet you somewhere during the day. I'll probably get to fredericksburg around 9:30, but need to leave by 12-12:30. i can come to quantico to meet you possibly. also how much for it?
  4. i will actually be in fredericksburg tomorrow, late morning. do 1 hour intervals stay in memory, thats all i use anyway
  5. That looks exactly like it. Ever grow also looks like that and there is a sticker with EG and some numbers, so maybe it is ever grow , anyway, it's not working
  6. so i get home today and my LED fixture isnt working. I bought it from a member here on WAMAS and he claimed it was an evergrow IT260. nothing on the unit itself or on the manual says evergrow, all it says is LED intelligent aquarium lighting system. Ive looked that up and looks exactly like TAO TRONICS or EUPHOTICA lights. anyway.... so the unit is getting power, there is a glow from the interface and when i press buttons it responds, just nothing on the screen, completely blank and no lights at all. I have tried unplugging it for a while and plugging it back in....nothing. ive looked for a reset button somewhere on it..... nothing, unless its inside the unit itself. does anybody have any ideas on what this may be. i dont want to just open this thing up, i have no idea what i would be doing once inside. Please help if you can. i have an order of gorgs arriving tomorrow. thank you
  7. so im looking to start spot feeding my coral and need recommendations on whats the best overall food to use. Ive searched online and reef roids, reef chili, coral frenzy all come up, but most of the posts are from years ago. So i would be feeding 2x a week, my coral list is as follows: frogspawn multiple zoas green sinularia long polyp leather palm cloves candy cane favia(not sure what kind, but looks like watermelon) Im also getting 3 different gorgs in a couple days, all photosynthetic i know that my coral dont necessarily need feeding. they seem to be doing just fine, but im looking to accelerate growth and make sure they continue to thrive. thats why i would only feed 1-2 times a week. Any suggestions or information from experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you
  8. They are snail eggs. Some fish eat them and if they don't, they are harmless.
  9. Ok good, I've been trying to search online and hadn't found anything other than some people talking about backflow being a problem.
  10. So i have a 180g with 2 drains going into my sump. originally the water enters the sump and falls approx 6 inches before hitting the surface of the water in the sump. I use a large filter sock that covers both drains and that helps to eliminate splashing, but it is very loud. So earlier tonight i inserted a piece of PVC into each drain pipe which extended it a couple inches below the water level. it eliminated the noise and made a HUGE difference. The PVC pieces are easy to pull out of the drain so its easy to remove them when changing out the filter socks. My question is, Is there anything wrong with having the drain pipe submerged under the sump water level? It didnt seem to change the level in my sump at all and i cant think of any reason why it is bad to do this. but im still new in this hobby and overlook things sometimes. Any info on this subject is appreciated. Thank you
  11. Check him out on YouTube , he has tons of cheap DIY stuff you can do. Mostly with aquariums and equipment. He also did a review for artfully acrylic on one of the drop off tanks
  12. Have you seen "the King of DIY"? He posted a video not long ago of one he made. Takes up very little space and he says cost 50 bucks to make.
  13. thanks everybody for sharing. i checked out the ones from turbo aquatics, although they look very good, im not looking to spend 400 on one. hahaha, i've heard of good DIY ones that cost anywhere from 50-80. i was hoping to find somebody that makes those and sells for 100-150 or less keep sharing your thoughts or experiences though
  14. im thinking of adding an algae scrubber to my 180. ive seen alot of different ways to do it DIY, but wondered if anybody locally makes them and sells them. I would be interested if they do. Also any reason why algae scrubbers are bad?
  15. who would you recommend buying them from? if i cant find any locally, i was thinking of gulf coast ecosystems. ive bought other macro from them and have been very happy. i would prefer to be able to buy locally to keep from having them shipped
  16. Looking for advice from anybody that has Photosynthetic Gorgonians. Like where to place, attach to rock or bury in sand, how close can you place them to other gorgs. even if its the same type. Im imagining have a few close together, but dont want to cause issues. How fast do they grow? also if anybody has any they want to sell, let me know, i'll post in the sale section for that. thank you
  17. I have used a few different pumps experimenting with it. I tried using a little giant external pump(which the previous owner used). It's too powerful and just blew water out of the skimmer. I preferred a Jebao dc8000, I use the same pump for my return and I like it, it has a controller which makes it adjustable. Even on the lowest setting, still too powerful. So I added a ball valve to the feed line so I can dial the flow back to contain it. Tried both pumps again and still not enough bubbles. I'm about done with this skimmer, looking for another one now
  18. your diagram isnt right. what you have labeled as outlet is actually the intake, and what you have labeled pump is the outlet. the "not venturi airline" is the air intake for the skimmer.. The video you show isnt the same type of skimmer as mine. My pump is located in the sump. some external skimmers require two pumps, this one does not. maybe it should hahaha
  19. there are bubbles in the body, just not enough. there is an air inlet on the skimmer itself that is supposed to supply the skimmer with bubbles, but i can see about an airline for the pump also
  20. ive tried keeping the water level just above the designated line, the guy i bought it from did the same and he said he had better results. I have actually tried it both ways given it 36 hours to adjust and it has the same results
  21. ok, here are some pics from this morning. I received my new pump yesterday and hooked it up, results are the same so far. My pump is 8000 liters/hour, but has a controller to dial it down, i also have a valve before the skimmer to dial it back if needed also. Let me know what you guys think. If it looks normal, just needs time, or if something is off
