  1. Tank is 1.5 years old. 2 Reef Radiance DM-165m. 6 inches above the water for 9 hours a day. The 4 large sps colonies are new. 2 are pictured above. The other 2 are fine. They were all dipped in Revive. I do water 15% water changes every 2-3 weeks. Setiing up dosers soon. Sump with fuge. Octopus skimmer. While the numbwrs are not ideal, should they be causing this?
  2. Just got back from a 10 day vacation and something is happening to some of my corals. Tank is a 90 gallon. I had someone come by a few times to check chematry and dose as needed. I am not sure if this is bleaching or necrosis. I am thinking the latter. Please give any input you may have. A couple of my SPS Look fine while others(below) are not. My frogspawn and hammer are also looking bad, especially the hammer. My oregon tort, shortcake coral and octospawn are looking fine. Below are my numbers and some pics. The phosphate is most likely my issue but i am unsure of the number i am getting. I am using an API phosphate test kit so it goes from 0 straight to .25 and i am having trouble judging the color. I will be buying a better test kit tomorrow. As well as probably ordering a phosphate reactor. Nitrate = 0. I only have one small clown in the tank. Po4 = .25 Ca = 410 Kh = 9.2 Mg = 1260 Temp fluctuates between 81-82 Green Montipora The base of this coral. Pink Stag Purple monti You can kind of see it on this acro. At the base of the branches. Below are pics of the frogspawn and hammer which are both looking strange. The hammer looks "sick" almost like it is wilting and not fully extending. the branches of my enchinata has channged from green to brown. Any ideas?
  3. Got these from a member but he wasnt aure what they were. 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) The little guy next to the BTA. 5.) & 6.) Left to Right
  4. So will it dissipate on its own? Do I need to take the filter sock out? Do a water change?
  5. So just put on a new filter sock and my skimmer is creating a ton of microbubbles. They are making it into the display despite the bubble trap. Is this normal? I didn't rinse it before putting it on so Should I remove the filter sock? For now I have cut off the skimmer but I can't do that for long? Any ideas what is going on?
  6. Gotcha, and yea i was already worried about the tank size. I may just stick with the 36 or 46 bow front and try to find a solution she can live with, maybe find a canopy somewhere or build one. I am familiar with the puffers, I had one for about 2 years but but i left the canopy open overnight and he decided to jump out of the 90 gallon and go carpet surfing. The fiancee was not happy so im trying to make amends. i don't want to put another one back in the 90 as i would like to keep clams and it is in the basement anyway. Thanks for all the info, I think you are right BioCube may not be the best solution here. General question about rimless tanks, what do most use to cover the tank to avoid fish jumping out?
  7. Thanks for the suggestion, what is AA stand for?
  8. Im hoping to run this tank without a sump and just a HOB skimmer and Filter. What type of lights do you have for the nano tank?
  9. I have convinced the fiancee that we need a tank in the living room, she is down as long as she can have her valentini puffer. She also says she wants it to look "nice, meaning she wants it to have some type of top or canopy, she just doesn't want an open top tank or lights hanging from the ceiling. So I am between a 46 bowfront or a biocube. I have never owned one nor do i know anyone that owns one so i have a few questions. There is one for sale at a local LFS for $350. It comes with LED lights. Are these LEDs good enough to grow coral? I see lots of threads online about modding the biocubes but nothing specific. What are the most common mods and why are they necessary? I was unsure of how a protein skimmer would fit in the back chamber and the owner showed me a small skimmer that was made for the biocube. He said it was powered only by an air opump, is it safe to assume that wont work very well? Basically are the BioCubes worth it and can they run well without doing any mods? Are those that have them happy with them? Etc.
  10. Thanks, I have gotten 2 by hand but for the life of me can get the remaining 2.
  11. So I am looking at setting up a second saltwater tank, hopefully on the cheap, on the main floor of our townhouse. Mainly because my 90 gallon is downstairs and it contains a valentini puffer that we have had for over 2 years. I am wanting to keep clams but that is obviously not going to work with him in there and i cant get rid of him as he is my fiancee's favorite fish. basically used it as an excuse for another tank as long as i am not breaking the bank. Tank will most likely be a mixed reef. So I have found a 65 gallon tank and stand online for $100. Tank looks good from what i can tell and the stand is in excellent condition. The stand does not have a compartment for a sump, this works as i really didnt want to have to have a sump on this tank anyway. So on to my questions. What would you do for filtration and lighting. A HOB skimmer is obvious but after that what? I was thinking an AC110 or an emperor 400 for the filter. Would this work, I have seen many threads where folks talk about these not being needed and being nitrate factories. I dont see how it is any different from a filter sock if you are cleaning it often. Also how would particulate be removed from the water without one? Would a canister filter be better? Now on to lighting, as I said before i want to do this as cheap as possible but still look good and be able to grow corals. Any ideas would be appreciated. This is the only suggestion i have had so far but i know nothing about these lights and if they would be suitable for the tank, http://www.amazon.com/OceanRevive%C2%AE-Arctic-T247-Spectrum-Dimmable-Aquarium/dp/B00YOYD3K2/ref=pd_sim_sbs_199_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41M1tVye9EL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1KYCSHH3YF3FES79S7QQ TIA
  12. Yea using a 4 stage Rodi from BRS.. I will be able to test daily starting next week so that should give me a better idea of what's going on
  13. I'm glad you brought this up. I was going to ask this in its own thread but I will go ahead with it here. My system is relatively young, I have some large LPS and all of my SPS are Frags, there are about 8 of them, most have only been in the tank about a month. Some are growing extremely fast and look great while others are meh, meh meaning get little to slow growth and the color not being great. My calcium seems to be depleting pretty slowly. I haven't gotten exact daily measurements due ton traveling a lot the past few weeks but I'd say it drops anywhere from 30-40 ppm over the course of 5-6 days. My Alk does not deplete near as fast. In fact I have only had to dose 2 times in the last month. Is this normal, I thought with daily dosing of 2 part, which I'm not doing, you would dose the Ca and Alk in equal amounts. This would not work with how the 2 elements are being used at different rates in my system. Am I missing something here?
  14. I know that is most people's optimum. Will mine be ok for a few days?
  15. My magnesium level in my 90 gallon reef is at 1200, is this too low? I'm leaving for 4 days and need to know if I should dose before leaving.
  16. This shouldnt be the issue as i have an ato that keeps the level pretty stable. I realized that i did have an issue with my filter sock that let a bit of debris into the sump. I am going to take the pump oout and clean it, hopefully it jsut has some crud in it that is slowing it down. If not this will be the 3rd Eheim i have had a problem with in the last year
  17. Very little just enough to get the water level back up to the E drain plus a slow flow into it. Even still I'm closing it so the water in the overflow shouldn't be getting lower over the course of a couple weeks
  18. So I'm running the Herbie method on my 90 gallon reef ready. I'm using an eheim 3000+ compact return pump. About 2 weeks ago I come home and the overflow is half empty, we'll below the E drain. So I closed the gate valve more to bring it back up. We'll I come home today and same issue, the water is a few inches below the E drain. So the only thing that could be causing this is that the return pump is decreasing it's output, correct? The pump is only a month and a half old and I thought eheim werected supposed to be quality pumps. Could anything else be the issue?
  19. Is this something that can be done part time, outside the hours of 8am-5pm?
  20. So would adding a trio of zebra dartfish be overstocking?
  21. So the kit shown above will hold 2 bulbs correct? Would they have to be right beside each other or could they be a foot apart? Also what bulbs would you recommend? My color and everything is good really just adding this for SPS growth
  22. So i have a 90 gallon mixed reef with canopy. I am currently running 2 DM-165m lights by reef radiance. With the way my canopy opens i ended up making a wooden frame that i sit the lights on. I want to supplement T5 but dont want to spend a ton and i want to be able to just attach them to the bottom of the wooden frame. Any ideas? I found the below on amazon but review say they are not great around moisture so that would be an issue http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AKKUEV0/ref=s9_simh_gw_p86_d1_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0XYEBCMEB77ZQXWTX2WS&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop
