  1. Little yellow clown goby enjoyed nipping SPS to no end, so he went off to live with seanoli tonight.
  2. Thanks! Now I feel like a real jackass for making him drop his foot. :( Hopefully it recovers.
  3. Oh and the foot kept wriggling around on its own. Was very disturbing.
  4. Saw this guy in the tank today near my montipora frag. Must've hitchhiked from something I got at the fall meeting. Got nervous, pulled him out with forceps but accidentally tore off a good portion of his foot. Whoops. Good guy, bad guy, indeterminate?
  5. Isaac's duncan corals wins the "fastest acclimator" award. Tentacles out within a few minutes of being transferred. Thanks for training it to be awesome, Isaac!
  6. You guys. I got so many frags today at the meeting. Great to put some faces to names/screennames. And I only spent mumblemumble dollars! Thanks!
  7. The sexy shrimp lost their breakfast to a roving gang of nassarius snails. These are very wimpy shrimps.
  8. Full tank shot, as requested. Lots of lime green film algae. Yesterday I noticed a ton of pods all over the glass. Had never noticed them before. The flame / dragon breath algae has gorgeous orange tips which didn't photograph well for some reason.
  9. Zoas as well. They are very closely related. Both are in Order Zoantharia. There's a lot of debate about which particular species are more or less toxic, but the phylogeny of corals is not completely understood. I've read that only a certain strain of (ugly IMO) paly is REALLY bad and the "pretty" zoas only contain low amounts of the poison... but that's no guarantee. There are thousands of people with a vested financial interest in being able to sell zoa color morphs for big bucks and thousands more who've sunk a lot of money and many hours into zoa husbandry. I'm not saying anyone is actively trying to sell unsafe coral for nefarious purposes, but I do think there's a lot of complex psychological factors involved that lead people to take unnecessary/irrational risks. Cognitive dissonance, denial, over relying on anecdotal experience, etc etc. There's an attitude of "if you just use common sense, you'll be fine." But it only takes one slip up, ya know? This particular reward/risk scenario skews too heavily in the risk direction for my tastes.
  10. After reading this thread, I have decided not to buy any zoas or palys. Wowzers. No pretty coral is worth that. Besides, anything that might make me a little sick would probably be more than enough to kill my parrots.
  11. Yes. I do daily feedings with a portion of a cube of Cyclop-eeze. I am forced to broadcast feed, because the YCG is terrified of the feeding tube apparatus and hides from it. YCG is a very slow, methodical, annoying eater. A good portion gets spit back out. It's getting very thin. At this point I don't really know what I can do but chalk it up as a lesson: "Make sure you see the fish eat before you buy it." Blennifer is thoroughly unimpressed with the Cyclop-eeze. "You call this FOOD? Food for ANTS maybe." Blennifer is pretty much always down to eat. One of the sexy shrimps molted overnight, found the shell stuck to the grate of the powerhead. I guess I am overdue on a full tank shot. For now, just imagine all my beautiful white dry rock covered in a powdery coating of lime green algae.
  12. Thanks. It's a little rough in person. I had to improvise to get the cutout area.
  13. Looks like an aeolid nudibranch, generally no bueno.
  14. Bought some cyclopeeze and Rod's frozen reef food on my way home from work. I think I've now spent 4x the purchase cost of the clown goby on frozen foods to try to tempt it to eat. I THINK I saw the clown goby eat some cyclopeeze, but it's so small and he was hiding under a rock at the time, so I'm not sure.
  15. Starting to get mild green film algae on some of the dry rock. Never went through the traditional post-cycle diatoms stage. I'm actually a little happy about the algae, I was worried I might be starving my herbivorous snails. Feast, my lovelies, feast! Nerite snails seem entirely worthless. They just cluster in the corner. I see a few move at night, but most just stay where they are. For the most part they stopped climbing out of the tank. I would think they're dead except they cling to the walls pretty tightly. Dwarf ceriths climb all over the rockwork, and the nassarius pull their weight. Trochus and astrea move all over. The trochus will occasionally do a little shimmy, which clinks against the rocks/glass. I don't know why they do this but I think it's great. Yellow clown goby continues its hunger strike. Garlic extract did not help. I need to track down a LFS that sells Cyclopeeze, ordering frozen food has crazy high shipping costs. @jwalsh's 3 sexy shrimp and tailspot blenny acclimated well and have good appetites. Also got from him 2 monti frags, some green/purple acans, and flame algae, all doing well. Installed the Tunze ATO, which is working well. Skimmer is disruptive to my sleep. I'll either need to sell it or get a timer/controller and turn it off at night. It's not loud-loud, it's just bedroom-loud. My ReefCleaners chaeotomorpha is almost completely melted away, which made a huge mess. Pieces of clear chaeto everywhere, I'm still picking it out. Never expected to have trouble keeping chaeto alive. When I had it previously it just grew and grew and grew. The remaining green bits are in a mediabasket with a dedicated fuge light. Hoping I can save some of it. Managed to save some of the red gracilaria algae by moving it into the shadows.
  16. At least one of them molted within 2 days of the transfer. They mostly hang out together, but 1 of them is a bit of an outcast and/or free spirit.
  17. One consideration: I don't know if the rear chambers are different sizes, but I would assume going forward IM will release accessories designed to work with the 40. The smaller bent-glass nuvos had notorious issues with spontaneous cracking, but there do seem to be some google hits for the 38 cracking as well.
  18. The Nuvo Fusion 40 is the newer model to replace the Nuvo 38. It has squared corners w/ black silicone rather than bent glass. It comes with a mesh lid vs glass lid. I think the bent glass models are all being discontinued.
  19. I had a similar situation with my Solana, except the stand was resting on bare wood floor. I used some heavy duty felt furniture foot pads as shims. Empty the water temporarily, it's worth it. Side note: So happy to see someone local with an SC Aquariums setup. I was thiiiiis close to buying one.
