Hey how did you frag the torch? I have an indo gold growing out of control and am trying to figure out a way to frag (maybe some sort of small bone saw?)

I just used big coral clippers. I know some folks use a dremel tool and a disk. They are pretty brittle.

I normally don't get any reaction unless it's the nem tank. Our 40 gal only has nem (~20) and I would get a minor rash and sting everytime I put my arm inside.

I never had a reaction to anything, until one day I moved a carpet nem, and I got what looked like little burns all over my hands! It didn't hurt or itch or anything, but if definitely irritated my skin!

I also have recently figured out that sometimes when I move rock or have my hands in the tank, I'll sometimes get suuuuuuper itchy fingers, and it's bristle worm stings. It doesn't hurt me, but it itches like crazy for days. I try and wear gloves now when I shuffle rock or am picking things up.

I've heard of people being irritated by torches before.

  3. That's too bad. I've attended several conventions in Pittsburgh over the past couple of years, most recently the American Homebrewers Convention, which was super fun, but probably a lot smaller then MACNA.

But 2014 (Denver) was definitely a success. As was ours in 2015.

If I could go back in time, I would buy every single Gonzo CSB I possibly could at the 2014 MACNA.

If I could go back in time to 2015, I'd probably get more whiskey, and a huge banner that said "REGISTRATION IS THAT WAY" *points to my right, your left*

I am planning to use Purple XP mold resistant drywall to skin the side of the walls where I am standing in the photos.  The fish room side of the walls near the tank will be covered with 1/2" PVC or left unfinished.  I can rip strips of 1/2" PVC of any width from a 4x8 sheet (about $100). I may trim around the tank on the inside of the fish room with those PVC strips. We hired a contractor to finish the rest of the basement but he's booked out until August.  What do you think of that plan?

I've never had, or built an in wall tank, but there are a few old heads around that have. Sounds like a solid plan to me.

I also think I want to become a contractor, you're not the first person I've heard say a lot of good ones are booked out 6 months to a year.

A standard 120 is a better fit. But, if you're up for it, either get it with external overflows or drill and install them yourself.

Depending on where you live, a member here may be able to help you with this if needed.

That's what I did with my 80 gallon Deep Blue. I'm not a big fan of any internal overflow, its such a real estate grab.

    Removed internal and scraped back

From the feedback here it looks like I should hold off and keep an eye out for a 48x24xSomething tank

    Yes.

    Is there a rush?

    First blush, neither.

There's no rush for something bigger, so I would wait until the stars aligned and everything was perfect.

Honestly, my thought here is to wait for something better in glass.

That's extremely helpful.  I had no idea they were notorious for seam failures. I guess that effectively eliminates that one from the running. I've heard the acrylic can be a challenge to get coraline off of. I keep my tank pretty clean and I know it would drive me nuts if I couldn't keep the glass/acrylic clean.

I'm going to look at Task Rabbit, I've never used it before, that's a good tip!

At least the Deep Dimensions. I've known more then a few WAMAS members who have had the issues, an old DMV vendor had the problem on their store display, and if you do a quick google search you'll get a lot of first hand experiences from folks.

  8. First blush, neither.

I've never owned an acrylic tank, but if I did, I'd most likely scratch the heck out of it.

The Marinelands (at least the deep dimensions) are notorious for having seam failures, and absolutely terrible stands.

If I had to choose one, I'd probably do the marineland. I'd choose a date, get friends to help, and rent the clubs suction cups. Get a few plastic storage containers for rock and livestock. For less than $30 a day you can rent a truck from Uhaul if you don't have one, or a vehicle big enough. I've also hired folks off Task Rabbit to help move tanks, couches, and an industrial kegerator into my basement.

I have 2 salinity testers. 1 is the one I was given with the tank. I believe it's a tetra and the other 1 I brought is a fluval but I think it's off. I have a rodi filters we're change maybe 8mnths ago. I am new to hobby so don't know what tds means. And water temp is 78

While a hydrometer is fine for testing, they do become off over time, and can't be calibrated. A refractometer is best, and relatively cheap. So your salinity might be off, and the water your making might be part of the culprit, especially if you don't know if your RO/DI is doing the job it's supposed to do.

We can speculate left and right, but still looking for numbers:

What are you using to test, and what are the numbers? Without this information we're shooting in the dark.

What exactly are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? What is your salinity? Are you topping off with fresh water? Do you have good surface flow? Are you dosing anything else you've not mentioned? What symptoms/behavior do the fish exhibit when unwell?

    • What are you using to test salinity? Is it calibrated.
    • What is your water temperature?
    • Do you have an RO/DI? If so, what is your TDS?

Without having any of the above information, I will speculate that 5 gallon water change on a 120 gallon is not a lot, a good rule of thumb is 10% of tanks volume weekly.

Here are some pics of my tank. Had this tank for about 2yrs now. And just recently went bad in like last 3 months. I did have high nitrates at 1 time but now they are fine. I use an ATI test kit, I have a 55gal sump and an older protein skimmer. I have 2 jebao wavemakers and the tank is drilled.

  11. Hello @Mbheat77Let me try and summarize here:

    • You had a bad algae outbreak 2 months ago.
    • You have a 120 gallon 6' tank.
    • You do 5 gallon water changes every week.
    • You've been dosing vibrant.
    • It looks better, but you still have an algae issue.

    Is that all correct?

    • First, how old is your tank? Do you have a photo you can share of your setup?
    • What are you using to test, and what are the numbers? Without this information we're shooting in the dark.
    • What are you using to test salinity? Is it calibrated?
    • What is your water temperature?
    • Do you have an RO/DI? If so, what is your TDS?
    • Tell us a bit more about your setup, is your tank drilled? Do you have a sump? What equipment are you running? What are you using for flow?
    • How many fish do you have, and what/how often do you feed?

Without having any of the above information, I will speculate that 5 gallon water change on a 120 gallon is not a lot, a good rule of thumb is 10% of tanks volume weekly.

Yup, they seem to be Oompa Loompa, how about the first one?. Do you think they are gorilla nipples or something else?

They're run of the mill Vietnamese Zoanthids, like the Eagle Eyes. We used to see them all over the club and an old reefer who was in the industry for a looooong time called them Gorilla Nipples.

Post #12 says he's not and that he's relying on his CUC at this point, which is what the consensus is. He was merely asking for more information about fluconazole for personal knowledge.

    Good eye.

I broke down a tank because of bryopsis. It was a 5 gallon nano, and I don't think at that stage the fluconazole solution was common knowledge. I later had bryopsis in my 22 gallon nano at the beginning. I used fluconazole, and followed instructions to a T, it took about a week and it took care of everything. This is the brand that I used.
