What do you do to help maintaining Calcium and Alkalinity?
Piper replied to Curtis Scott's topic in General Discussion
I'm willing to give it a go again, but I'm not very good at setting the stuff up and the wham bam attempts I've paid for in the past have resulted in near disasters. Pretty much lost interest in trying to automate for the time being. I work from home so really I could be doing this three or four times a day instead of one as I do with vitamins or feeding. Need some smaller jugs. I'm dosing from 5gal jugs for the moment. A little cumbersome. -

I'm doing two part b-ionic and magnesium dosing by hand daily but am switching over to the BRS products when these run out. I don't seem to do well with automation and I don't like testing much, so I tend to get buddies or helpers to do an alk an calcium test every week or two. Did the last one today. Dead on perfect. Problem with only dosing daily is I get a good pH bump from the carbonate until it buffers, so I'm going to try doing four parts, calcium, some carbonate, bicarbonate and magnesium. -
Should have been more patient last night. Great feedback. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

Not reeftopia? I have a shipment coming from them as soon as they can scrounge up a sand sifting star. Shot them an email about the bods a couple days ago but got impatient. Just placed the order with reefs2go.

That's great information. Thanks.

Reefs2go's offer seems decent, free shipping and $9.95 per 500. I want to get a bunch to heavily seed my reef. I have one very happy mandarin in there now so I figure he's getting something, but I've never actually seeded the tank. Normally I'd say that means I have no copepods, however, when I did my last tank I already had the massive 3xVolume rated skimmer running when I took delivery of my live rock and laid it all out flat on the bottom and left it alone for months, kept a lot of stuff on the rock alive. I really have no idea if that'll keep copepods alive, but my one mandarin is really, really happy in there. However, I have two more on the way. Time to make sure I have a good food supply. Anybody have any feedback on reefs2go? Seen some feedback that isn't so positive. Any other good sources?

Really disappointed I didn't catch the BRS sale earlier yesterday. Missed out on the insane digital salinity refractometer deal. Holy crap that makes me sound geeky. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

220 gallons with a skimmer rated at over three times that. Most of the fish are smallish, gobies, blenny, 6 line, anthias, etc. Couple larger ones.

Cyber Monday will probably be just as good, but I did my shopping today. I Like hitting Liveaquaria on Fridays because I can have a cart with last week's sale items still good when this week's sale starts. Had some really deep discounts on nice fishies. I've kept my reef sparcely populated up until now letting the coral grow in. Time to populate. Have 22 fishies on the way.

(Another) Evergrow LED configuration question
Piper replied to Shoelace's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the thread. I'm right where you are. Listening intently. -
My steed stayed in the garage that day, but FAIK the post delivered by pony express. I'm going to miss them. They have a couple months at most before they need replacing, and I'm planning on replacing with LED.

Anybody have any idea how long a bottle of these vitamins can sit out without refrigeration? I picked up a large supply, opened it several days ago and have been just leaving it on top of the tank pouring a table spoon or so every so often. Then this morning I notice that it's supposed to be refrigerated after opening. Any have any idea if I've killed the bottle already or not?

KZ may be no secret, but Figi Purple is the secret ingredient. I have 20 T5's on my tank, four figi's among them. Rest are all ATI blue plus and blue special with a couple of aquasuns up front.

I had that problem once. My fix was raising the water level in my sump and better isolating my feed pump from everything else.

The coolest saltwater item you have owned

I had a look earlier. All I could find quickly were pics of the current tank. Must be some somewhere, but don't know where. -

I really should get serious about my tanks. I only have the one, but have a plan for three more, total of over 1000 gallons and never seem to set aside a budget for them. I have a great connection in HI that can send me my livestock next time. The guy I used to buy from died tragically on a dive. I'm still in contact with a friend of his though. When I do it, I want to do the full Hawaiian aggressive deal, dragon eel, xhatches, probably declivis this time instead of tinkers, some other large items, probably a chevron. If I'm going to do the overnight from HI to the east coast, need to do it right once. -

Trifecta of mated Crosshatch triggers, flames and tinkers. Was years ago. Unfortunately had more dollars than sense and lost the tank. Will do it again someday. Hopefully soon. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk -
Cute, coral shrimp perched atop idaho grape.

Now that I've finally figured this out, I suppose I'll figure out how to snap better pictures. Through glass with a cell phone probably leaves much room for improvement, me thinks.

Funny, Bub. I've only been called Bub one other time in my life. I was out of town watching a band at a bar and the bartender made my drinks way too strong. Went back the next day looking for the truck that ran me over and they said "Hey, it's Bub!" :-) Apparently I was too inebriated to speak my name correctly. Here are a couple more.

The tank has grown in to where you can pick a random nook just about anywhere and wait for a decent shot. I didn't wait for this one really, but just noticed and snapped a pic. Will probably try harder for interesting shots over time. But it's getting pretty. Wish the color came out better in the pics.

Good idea. Might try that. Clear bottles :-) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Got clogged way up at the pump. Up on the shelf, I didn't notice for a while and like I said don't test religiously so by the time I discovered it, I was on the verge of disaster. Lost a couple of corals and several haven't fully recovered. But we're on the right track now, calc at 450 and alk steady.
