  7. So sorry for your loss! It is hard to help the kids with losses like this and cope with your own feelings. Hang in there.
  8. I was going about 10 hours; I reset the timer for 8 based on reading here on the forum about bulb changes. Any suggestions? Thanks Glenn!
  9. Cool!! I was having a panic attack this morning; trying not to burn the kids' toast while simultaneously checking on all my critters and wondering if I was going to spend Friday night canvassing my LFS! I have just got the new montiporas I got at the winter meeting growing; as well as an awesome birdsnest frag from Pacific East. I will sit tight and see what happens!
  10. So I changed the 150w MH bulb I had in the fixture I bought from another reefer off CL. SHe said it had about a year on it 6 months ago. I had no info on the bulb aside from the wattage and the fact it was DE. So I guess I randomly selected a 14K bulb (bought at 10pm online after long day, I may have been judgement impaired). After getting and returning a bulb that didnt work, last night I installed the thing and reset my timer. This morning I get up to see how everythings doing and see I now have a very blue tank. Remeidal reading indicates this what I should expect from 14000K bulb. That said, what are my poor fish and corals gonna do and should I run out for a whiter bulb?
  11. ewww! But my kids think its cool!
  12. Thanks everyone for the support! I promised myself I would stick with the 55 for a year while I got comfortable with the marine aquarium basics. 5 months in and I am totally wanting more room to play with. Let's see if I can hold out til march, at least then I will have the excuse of a birth day I am feeling much better about the potential plumbing project now. Now to read all the threads about this kind of project!
  13. Thanks! I am just trying to go into the project well armed...
  14. Okay, so I really want to add a sump to my 55 gal to increase the water volume, get a better skimmer and improve water quality. My issues is: fear of plumbing. I can't even jiggle the toilet handle without breaking something! I was hoping some of you more experienced folks might have a list of supplies/tools I should have on hand and some general hints as I embark on planning this project? Thanks in advance for your wisdom!
  15. Thanks to all, I am looking forward to my first meeting! Yea!
  16. So sorry to hear it! Having tanks at schools sounds so cool, though! When I get a little more seasoned, I would love to start on at my kids school....
  17. Right now I am only adding the 2 part (Ca and trace minerals )supplement everyother day. I will have to check on salt mix, my test kit is the API kit for reefs (CA, dKH, etc.). I have a high PH kit for Marine systems. Thanks for all the help!
