  1. That's actually "Meteor Shower" Cyphestrea. One of my favorite corals. Underal normal light it's more of a blue/teal with pink polyps - the iphone makes everything more violet. I have a emerald green one with red polyps as well that I brought back from the dead. Great, low light, encrusting coral. Thanks again for all the kind words.
  2. I'm a little scared for the growth honestly. Quality problems, I know. I'm already fragging out so many corals right now so they don't drown out others. I'll have another big round available soon. Thanks for the kind words!
  3. Thanks for the kind words. Here are some more undoctored shots. Trying to get used to tank photography, I'm still quite a novice.
  4. Thank god for home insurance. Word to the wise - call your company and make sure your tank is covered.
  5. And a heavily compressed video. I'll upload a better one to youtube as I'm able: http://vid1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc418/jrg993/IMG_3641.mp4
  6. Hey all! I'm finally going around to showing off my tank. I've been in the hobby for 6 years straight now, I upgraded to the build below in April 2012, so my tank is now 2.5 years old. I've had ups and downs but things are finally settled. After a recent tank leak (which caused over $17,000 damage to my house), I got some help from King of Corals and moved it to my basement. Sorry for the blue iPhone shots, my wife promises me she'll photograph some good shots using our Macro lens soon. Pics in the next post. Anyway, thanks for checking it out, I love feedback and suggestions. I'll post a livestock list and I'm happy to answer any questions. Tank Build: 75 Gallon Rimless 30 gallon sump Lighting: 2 AI Vega’s – 8 hours/day at max of about 60%, mostly blues 1 2x54W T5 – 6 hours/day one ATI Purple Plus, one ATI Blue Plus Flow: 1 MP40, 2 MP10s set to ecosmart mode Filtration: 1 Sock, Reef Octopus MWB150 Skimmer, Dose Vinegar (70 ml/Day), ¼ Cup GFO/month, ½ Cup Rox Carbon/month. I also automate a slow 8% water change per day using a dual head Stenner peristalitic pump Other: 30 Gallon ATO plumbed into my RO/DI unit. Dose BRS 2 Part on peristaltic pumps. Also dose Red Sea Max Colors once per week.
  7. This is pretty much exactly what I do - but with more frequent, smaller doses. Works great.
  8. Thanks guys - it's not a 911. I found one on zoro.com for 90 bucks shipped. It's a good thing to have as I already tried to use it as an excuse to upgrade the tank. Wife was not amused
  9. Can I get the 100 Gallon ones at Lowes or Home Depot?
  10. Hey Folks - I have a 75G Rimless plus sump tank that leaked about 7 gallons of water on the floor... I didn't re-tighten my gfo/carbon canisters after I was distracted and the water leaked out slowly over night. Anyway the water warped the hardwood floors and soaked the insulation in my basement so my wife (the one who distracted me :P ) insisted on calling insurance. Now I'm going to have to move the tank, I'm hoping to leave the livestock in containers with powerheads and heaters until the work is done. How long can they survive like this? I have a few easier to keep sps's, most of the tank is LPS. I really don't want to tear the tank down, set it up, tear it down, set it up again... Love this hobby sometimes! Thanks for the help. Any suggestion/advice welcome. I'm trying to look at this as an opportunity to get rid of most of the sandbed, and maybe an aggressive fish... Jeff
  11. Hey Folks - So my RO/DI unit, which is going on 2.5 years now, is starting to show 1 TDS despite the DI resin being fairly new (and still over 1/2 blue, its the BRS color changing stuff.) Any ideas what to replace to fix this? Is it time for a new R/O membrane maybe? The water going in is 5 TDS. Thanks! Jeff
  12. And getting big press http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/13/fisherman-attacks-environmentalist-underwater_n_5313648.html This is in Hawaii. This could be enough to tip the scales. So stupid. It could have *easily* killed her.
  13. I thought WSSC uses chlorine generally - is this not true?
  14. Ditto, love this place. It's too far for a single day drive from DC IMO (3+ hours each way, no traffic.)
  15. FWIW, while the sting wounds did spread - they've now stopped and it looks like this acro is on the road to recovery! Glad I kept it in the sand bed for as long as I did. It's now mounted and growing.
  16. Thanks for the info. I decided to take the cautious route and just mix up some more BRS last night. I'll be selling my gallons of b-ionic soon.
  17. Hey folks – I’m thinking of switching over to B-Ionic for daily dosing of for Alkalinity and Calcium. I've calculated the changes using this handy calculator: http://reef.diesyst.com/chemcalc/chemcalc.html I’m fairly certain I'm prepared, but I’m starting to hedge. I tried to switch salt mixes about 8 month ago and the results were tragic despite slowly transitioning over… Has anyone else done this or something similar? Is it even worth it? My tank is humming along pretty well – though I do have color problems with some of my acros (they’re very pale) so I’m thinking I’m missing some trace elements that the B-Ionic will provide. Plus, it seems that a lot of folks with successful mixed and SPS heavy tanks use this product. Any thoughts, suggestions, advice would mean a lot to me. Thanks – Jeff
  18. 100% sure about this - they were literally breaking the store down while I was there. And other than the 267 I have no idea what tolls that poster is talking about. And, in my experience, there are several more coral vendors to hit once your in NoVa than Fredrick - though I guess you're adding more like 30 minutes to your trip. That said, I'll definitely be checking out the ones in Ijamsville soon!
  19. These guys had a 50% discount today - looks like they're moving up to Fredrick. Sad to see that it's now a good 1/2 hour to any decent salt water store from Rockville. I guess they're getting a bigger space. I will say if I'm getting in my car for an hour round trip or more, I can hit several stores in NOVA or just one in Fredrick...
  20. 2nd that. I make a 'pilgrimage' up there every 6 months or so.
  21. No, it's STNing now. It was stung at least a dozen times. Everything else in the tank is fine though.
