  1. My original fx5 motor is stuck(maybe just needs a tap, or something?), but the screws r rusted, so I had to buy a new bucket and new motor, but it’s seemingly impossible to do anything with screwing it on. The bucket has these weird things instead of nuts, and the screws, which leave u no room to work with, don’t seem to go in. I’m about to return them and buy a whole new fx5 or fx4, but hate the idea of that much money, especially cause I’m just stuck by stupid rusty screws, and again by stupid Fluval parts. I guess my last option is to see if I can find someone who would be able to try to do it for me, if it’s even possible. I already put in for returning the bucket and motor, but can cancel the requests, but don’t want to put that and a working filter off, so I just have by the weekend at the longest. If anyone local(Columbia, Howard county)can help, I’d be happy to hear from you!
  2. While working on the tank, I felt a slight sting in my finger which I took as an electric charge. So I took a multimeter, stuck the red probe in the water and the black probe in the ground/3rd hole of the outlet. Sure enough, I got 30V on the multimeter!! I systematically turned off each electrical item in the tank but the multimeter never dropped to 0. Removing some pumps seems to drop or even increase the current but I'm assuming that they are acting as poor grounding probes when they are off which may explain why I see current dropping when I restore them... In any case, I'm very confused and worried that I may have a dangerous situation. I have a grounding probe which helps but obviously isn't the correction I'm looking for.
  3. Hello! Just to start off, thanks to everyone in general for being so helpful! I noticed today that there is something growing from the live rock in one of my students' tanks. I'm trying to make sure it's not something I need to be worried about. I know you can get both good and bad hitchhikers on live rock, so help identifying would be much appreciated! I've attached a picture I took. From what I've been seeing online it looks like it might be a Glass Anemone, but since I'm inexperienced, I wanted to double check.
  4. I just noticed this a few days ago-it definitely wasn't there before that! It's a dark line that appears to be a section of his backbone! He acts 100% perfectly, and it's totally internal, there's no bump, or other external signs. You can still see it a little bit from the outside in these pictures, but normally you can only see it when the light is shining through him. I've never seen this before and it's really scaring me. Has anyone seen this, or anything similar to this at all before, in any kind of fish, fresh or salt? Does anyone have any educated ideas about it? This annoying thing won't let me upload pics, even though they definitely fit-they're exactly the same As every other thing I've uploaded on here! I'll try uploading them on a reply here
  5. Hey everyone! I'm looking to frag these Green Nepthea in my tank and was wondering if any of you would be willing to help me out. I've never propagated my own coral before! These are stuck to the main display rock, and removing them from the tank is impossible, so I need a way to cut them cleanly and sterilize the wounds in the tank. I have 10 plugs ready to go, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to attach them to said plugs as well. I know many of you have way nicer corals, but I'd be willing to donate a few of the frags to some helpers! -Matt -LGV10, no filters or optics
  6. I had to build a new stand for a tank I bought because the stand itself seemed a bit dangerous (it seemed to have stress cracks in the back). I built the tank following this blueprint from http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1169964 I am not sure how it happened but I ended up have the tank 4.5 inches too wide. So 3 of the sides of the tank are directly supported by 2x4 and the front is not. Tank Stand http://i.imgur.com/wzqWPRI.jpg Under Tank Stand http://i.imgur.com/KbraNnJ.jpg I am trying to think of options of how to fix the situation. I was considering just adding 2 more support beams below to support the front side that doesn't directly have a 2x4. I was also thinking adding a 2x4 so its perpendicular to the middle support beam but fully supports the length of the unsupported front. However, both of these would be just supported by kreg screw joints (pocket holes) and not directly transferred to a vertical 2x4. I am not sure if that would be a problem given its only the front and all other sides and corners are supported. I have seen commercial stands with little to no front support but the top is 1 1/8" thick to my 1/2" plywood top (but mine does support the plywood with one, up to three 2x4 supports.) Thoughts?
  7. Hey Everyone! I have been doing FW for a long time. I raise shrimp (Crystal Red Shrimp and Red Cherry Shrimp) and I have been contemplating going into SW. I picked up a 40 gallon breeder at Petco for there $1 a gallon sale and about 25 lbs of live rock. I think I need to buy some additional equipment but I also don't want to spend a fortune. Here is where I am stuck. Light I am considering buying this one: Current USA Orbit Marine Aquarium LED Light, 48 to 60-Inch http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GFTSV24/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Eventually I want to do a reef tank. Atm, I just want to get some clownfish and anemones. Protein Skimmer Clueless one which I should get Filter: I run HOB and canisters for my FW but I am reading alot about sumps and I am wondering how the heck I should install one on this 40B. Should I drill a hole? If so where, with what equipment I get from where, what diameter etc. If not, should I just get a HOB overflow box and make my life easer? For the sump, what pumps do i need? A return pump prob for the water to go back. How should I design/buy equipment so it doesn't overflow? Thanks for your wisdom and help! I really appreciate it!
  8. Should WAMAS have a Public Forum for Emergencies? The purpose of the forum would be if someone is having an "event" like I did today and think that they might screw up their entire system, or really not sure what is the best solution. You could post it a thread if you really had a problem. My problem today was " Nem just got sucked into Vortech" I had a response in 8 min (thanks Ben), and 14 min (thanks Isaac). That could be the difference between a tank crashing, and a rescue. We should call it Reef Rescue 911. So if someone posted, they could get instant help "10:00p and my tank just cracked, anyone willing to help with extra tanks/ containers, and water" Then people could sign up to follow the topic, if they were willing to help online or in person. It seems like it could help a lot of people in a tough situation. You could only post in it if you were really worried about a major problem vs. had a question or were curious. This would allow people to sign up to follow, without the fear of getting pinged every couple hours on a general discussion. What do you think?
  9. Hi everyone, I have a sick Kole Tang and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me. This is the first time I have had any of my fish get sick in my 2 years in the hobby so other than put him in quarantine (I have done this) I don't know what to do. I have attached a photo so that you can see what he looks like right now and maybe identify the problem. I apologize for the quality of the photo but it was very hard to get a crisp image because of how he was swimming. Thanks, pale-rider12
  10. http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc418/jrg993/photo.jpg Please help! This happened to this Acro Frag *overnight* - it's covered in small holes. I'm going to dip it when I go home to see what falls off but if someone could ID it for me I would really appreciate it. My water params are really locked, all other corals fine - it looks like a nasty pest of some kind. You can really see the hole at the bottom of the frag but if you look close it's covered in them. I've never seen damage like this - especially this rapidly.
  11. Hi All... So, I finally have most of the components for my 90 Gal bow... (up grading from a 36 Gal Bow) Got my sump, MP-40, skimmer, DC12,000 pump, apex lite, (still need lights) and other such items.... Now, I need help building a stand. I am looking at something rather simple 5' long by 2' wide... although I am looking to do something with more "finesse" in regards to piping and electrical wiring. Additionally, I would like to have enough room under the stand for a 10gal quarantine tank, and possibly an ATO tank (although I might build a separate stand for the ATO in the form of a RODI storage tank as well as a holding tank for NaCl Water on the same stand) *4 tanks... 2 stands* In regard to finesse, I mean organized and neat... I don't want a birds nest of wiring or a plumber's nightmare.... So.. if you are full of ideas, and well organized, I could use your help. Saturday... Please PM me with questions, etc... Or post them here... that is fine too I guess... Also, I live in South Arlington near Pentagon City.. -B
  12. So, I am finishing my coral move tomorrow morning and I need to remove my clam from my 50g, with sand, to the new 150g.... How do I move it without hurting its foot and killing it? It's been doing really well and. Can't wait for it to have more space!
  13. I need some help, I have never run into ich before luckily, but I have only had my 55 reef tank up for a year. I do see what looks like some discoloration on my copperband butterfly's tail fin. If someone could help me out I would really appreciate it. I don't want it spreading to my other fish. I just got the copperband a few days ago, he was eating at the LFS so I took him in good hope that he would eat in my tank. He has been picking off the rocks but hasn't eaten any mysis, kril, brine or pellets yet so I'm still trying. But I really don't know how to identify it, and want to take preemptive action. Thanks, and check out the pics I hope it helps.
