  2. so where are the drinks? What's a happy hour conversation without happy hour drinks??? :p
  3. h*ll John, the day I am in the World cup I will buy me a white tang! ??? Eddi
  4. John, The Marine Center is famous for their ability to get in rare fish as well as their willingness to charge for them. However, they have excellent customer service. Eddi PS I am Italian as well, born and raised, 5'10", and my chances of making the NBA are just as good as yours! :D The World Cup is another story, however! :D :D :D
  5. There is a difference between cheap and frugal. Sounds lke you know what that difference is. Good luck to you. Eddi
  6. Michael, I plan on following your recipe this Sunday and making a batch. If you are interested message me here or by e-mail and I will let you know how it went. Eddi
  7. I agree with Kabala. Is the rsik really worth it? Yes, you are most probably safe in using it with a liitle bit of common sense, but why would you? If aquarium sealant were hard to find or too expensive to the point of not being able to afford it you may make a case for it, but neither case is true. Just my .02. Eddi
  8. Michael, I think it would have to be due to the cuts. First, you have a grounding wire that should remove any stray voltage from the tank; second, if the wire stopped working you should feel the sensation on either side of the tank. Electricity does not discriminate! ??? Eddi
  9. You also can not go too slow. If you do, the blade may bind with the acrylic, especially with larger holes, and then you will have serious problems. If possible, buy a piece of acrylic the same width as your collection cup and practice first to find the correct method. I usually take a nail and make a small mark so the bit will somewhere to start and it won't slide, scratch and possibly even crack the acrylic. Good luck, Eddi
  10. Holiday? Is today a holiday? And you actually have it off? Must be nice.... :D I will be very interested in your update. I have a major flatworm infestation. It started after I added a coral from the CC, but I can't say for certainty whether that was the catalyst. My fault for not checkng more carefully. I have a 125 gallon reef; has anyone tried the greenex route in a larger tank? Eddi
  11. dgasmd, you have a large tank, right? over 300 g if I remember correctly. I have a 360 anf my CA had hovered in 350 range for a while so I have started dosing kalkwasser 24/7 a couple of days ago to see if I could bring it up. If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions. Were you able to raise your CA at all with kalk? How long did you try and what was your dosage? Thanks, Eddi
  12. Tom and Craig, thanks for the quick replies. I know there is a full meeting next month, where I plan to join WAMAS, and a social at TRF in December. I think the socials are a great thing and wanted to make sure it was going to continue. I may be interested in hosting a social at my house next year. send me a message if you decide to go that route. Eddi
  13. Hello everybody, I was not able to attend the meeting last Saturday so I was hoping someone that was there would be nice enough to post a brief summary. Was it a success? How many people were there? Was there lots of exchanging or just buying from Leon? I like the informal gathering format. Any chance this can be a recurring thing even if not at a LFS all the time? Thanks, Eddi
  14. Larry, sand sifting star fish will clean your sand of both good and bad inhabitants. They will eat detritus, but they will also eat all your copepods, etc. If you have a refugium, and can replenish your DSB population, then you are ok. If you do not have one, pull it out or it will decimate it, then die. Eddi
  15. Tom, I was not able to make the meeting saturday night, but I did stop by CC at lunch time and picked up two corals from Leon. I inspected both of them fairly closely and did not notice any foreign creatures on mine, but now you have me worried. Please keep us posted on your situation and good luck with your acro! Eddi

    reef stores

Tgallo, a few local stores have some dry goods in stock. As Pez mentioned, The Reef Tank and the Marine Scene have a limited supply in stock. In addition, Pets Plus in Annandale, Roozen in Forth Washington and the Aquarium Center in Randallstown have a fair on hand inventory. As far as prices, yes local LFS will be more than MO but you get it right away and you have don't have to ship anything back if something breaks. It is up to you to decide if the price difference is worth it. Eddi
  17. Alberto, I am not going to call. I have not been there in several months, so whatever they have will be new to me. Eddi
  18. I am going through a similar situation in my 360. I will recap; please note that I waited at least 2 weeks between adding fish. I set up my tank with 300 lbs of SD, 25 lbs of live sand and 300 lbs of live rock. I let it cycle until all my parameters were 0, then waited two more weeks. I started adding fish: 1) 4 chromies - no problem 2) 4 more chromies and a long nose hawk - no problem 3) 2 lobsters, a blue and a spanish, I had in another tank - no problem 3) a pair of cleaner, pair of coral banded and a pair of gold banded shrimps - no problem 4) a scopas and naso tan - no problem 5) a pair of lamark angers - no problem then I ordered a pair of Japanese Swallowtails from the Marine Scene in California and all h*ll broke loose. I acclimated the fish as I always do and they hid for two days. Did not worry much because they were active. One morning the male showed signs of ich. I tried to catch it but could not; the next day the female had it. I almost climbed in the tank but caught them and removed them to a QT tank; they both died. Within 8 days I lost the lamarks; within three weeks I lost the naso. I made two large water changes within a week (about 100 gallons total), waited three weeks and added an atlantic blue tang. It died in three days. The remaining fish and crustaceans I are fine. I have made another large water change, about 60 gallons, waited three more weeks and I just added another atlantic blue two days ago. So far so good. I don't know whether it was caused by stress, or the shipment, or something in my water. I don't know if it is a bacteria that has taken root in my rocks and will always be there. If this atlantic blue dies I am seriously considering emptying it and starting over. Sorry about the long post but i wanted to let you know you are not alone. Eddi
  19. For future reference, the Reef Tank in Fairfax will make a home visit to drill your tank, depending on where you live. There is a charge, I am not sure how much though. Eddi Maybe next time I should try actually reading the original post. Sorry about that.
  20. I know this is awfully late notice but I am planning on visiting the Coral Connection tomorrow morning, Saturday October 19. Probably around 9 or 10 AM. I live in Fairfax, anyone interested? I will check back both tonight and tomorrow morning. Leave a message if interested or call me on my cell: (703) 927-0868. Would love to meet other reefers. Eddi
