  1. you aren't the first person to mention a UV sterilizer, so it looks like i'll be getting one. is that the the only thing do to treat the one fish? i know it'll help the entire tank but i don't have one right now, and i don't have the money at the moment so it would be a while before i could install one.. oh and thanks about graduation, it's high school. i was going to go into education but about 2 weeks before school ended i started thinking to myself about how i really don't want to spend the rest of my life in a school! so i'm going into nursing . hopefully i'll stick to it, the more people i talk to about it and the more i look into it, the more excited i get
  2. so i got a hippo tang as a graduation present, i just graduated yesterday ..but it's been through a bit of moving around and when i was working on the tank today i noticed a bunch of white spots on its fins and body :( :( like i said, this fish was a special graduation present, and also the only reason i got such a big tank. i would be completely devastated to lose it..advice and/or help would be hugely appreciated! ~desperate!
  3. So I'm taking a break from a research paper I'm working on and I decided to give my tank a little more TLC for the day when I noticed 2 things: -My clownfish loves me, no joke. It normally stays in the right hand side of the tank, however when I walk up to the tank to examine it, no matter where my face is, it comes right up to it and watches me, usually right at my eye level. So when I noticed that tonight I wanted to see if it would follow me wherever I went around the tank, and it did. Everytime I moved, it followed. Everytime I stick my hand in the tank it swims right up to it, poking at my fingers. I know that's means it's probably looking for food, and yes i can hand feed it, but for some reason....I'm a huge dork for discovering this....but I can kind of...pet it... Is anyone else as big of a dork as me?? -The second thing I noticed is that the larger of my two damsels is slightly losing the bright blue color in it's face and down on it's belly....is that normal? I don't see any little white spots anywhere, on any of my fish for that matter, and I'm not seeing any other signs of ich....actually I don't think loss of color is a symptom of ich so...what could it be? I've tried looking it up to find an answer but I can't seem to find anything....no other fish is bothering it, that's actually the damsel that's picking on everyone else! But, as mean as this little fish is, I'm still worried.. :( Thoughts? Suggestions? Help? Thanks in advance
  4. So the lights made it to my house finally and are up and running! Pics!: (they're a little blurry, but, considering i took these pictures with my phone, i think they look pretty good..........i'm camera-less, can you tell?) full tank shot firefish!!!! i love them clownfish and mean damsel #1 they stick together [says the clownfish: ooh wha's dat?? camera??] clownfish again and mean(est) damsel #2 (the view from my bed--it's a wonderful view ) I could never could have pulled this is off if it weren't for everyone here on wamas, and especially not without jason. Thank you all!
  5. SO the tank officially has lights now. well almost officially.... ....the lights are still at jason's house while the tank is....at mine.... Anyway here are some of the pics from our most recent project : PS) i know it looks like we're attaching the lights to the top but i promise we're not.....haha, we just laid everything out up on the top so that we could make sure everything fit and was measured out correctly... Aaaaand the lights are on! Just a few more adjustments and making things look neater and then to get it to my house and we're done!
  6. So far everything is running pretty smoothly, except the temperature of my tank is going to be a concern in warmer weather....which of course we all already knew. But I'll worry about that when it comes up. The skimmer is fixed, it's all pretty quiet--I sleep 2 1/2ft away from it. The fish are all doing well, except for one of my two damsels. He was fine when I put everyone in there, but recently and pretty suddenly, he started picking on everything that moved. One of my fish has a bitten-up tail fin! It's not a terrible wound and I'm sure it will heal-I've seen a fin worse than that heal up-but I can't catch the bully to get him out of there!! Suggestions on capturing him, anyone? Or is that something no one else can really help with? And once I catch him, I don't have another little tank set up anywhere, so could I put him in my sump until he learns how to behave? --the mermaid with severe insomnia
  7. Well, I'm not too sure what I did, but the skimmer is fixed. It's skimming well and running properly, as far as I can tell .
  8. I have a turbofloater 1000 skimmer with the aquamedic pump and i've got a problem: it isn't skimming properly. the cup is filling wayyy too quickly, and not actually skimming anything...the water in the cup is pretty clear, and jason and i can't figure out what we can do about it. we've tried turning the valve right behind the skimmer to reduce the amount of water going into it, it's almost shut at this point, but that still isn't helping. we've tried twisting, turning, and repositioning just about everything in there and it's not changing anything. has something like this happened to anyone else? what can i do to fix it? (as soon as my phone decides its actually going to send the picture to my email account, i'll post a pic so you can see how it's set up....my phone took a swim while we were aquascaping.. :( )
  9. So, thread-followers, guess what? I have a running tank in my room . Water Rock Fish the works  So here are pics from the final day of setup here for your viewing pleasure-- Enjoy: I'm still working on the lights, but other than that, the long wait is finally over and Jason and I have ourselves a running tank! We owe a huge thank you to anyone who has helped us in this long process, and to anyone who has followed along with this thread for so long--thank you!!
  10. i wonder if i could fit in my tank......i'm rather small.... kidding awesome pic!
  11. With the setup of my tank completed, Jason and I wanted to come up with a way to make the plumbing inside the stand look a little more uniform by painting it all black..except we already put everything in place and glued it together. I obviously cant spray paint anything under there since it's already together so I was wondering if there was a black paint that i could just brush on, but it would still be reef safe? Does something like that exist or will I just have to live with the plumbing the way it is?
  12. Bump, gonna use this on my tank. Thought I'd give newbies a chance to look.
  13. Just like your name, use a magnet to search for it. Try a very large magnet or a small very good rare earth magnet.
  14. bump i'm currently posting from a hotel in florida, i will be spending most of spring break here on a cruise starting tomorrow, but i'll be back thursday night so the remaining work to be done on my tank will be completed sometime on friday....too far away! but the trip wasn't my choice sooo what can i do about it? not much. but anywayyy, thanks for the opinions & advice you two! very much appreciated anyone else care to share theirs?
  15. Alright sooo, as long as nothing goes horribly wrong (knock on wood), I SHOULD have my tank filled with salt water, all/most of my rock, two clownfish, aaand i believe the damsel (if it's still there.....it's hard to tell from a tub), all from Jason by FRIDAY. So I think now would be a pretty ok time to bring up the other fish (etc...) I want to eventually have in my tank. I figure if i start naming now, someone out there will let me know if there's something I absolutely CANNOT have. SO, that being said, here goes: -Everyone knows or should know at this point that the one fish I really REALLY want is a hippo tang. I know there was a lot of controversy when I brought this up before but after talking to several (as in I lost count how many) people about having one in a 75g tank, I've figured out that if I get one, I will eventually have to sell it. Which is fine with me, I want to get it while it's tiny (they're so cute ) and it will take quite a while for it to 'outgrow' my tank. I think I am definitely getting this fish. -If I do, however, get talked out of getting a hippo tang, I would like to get maybe a yellow tang instead. -The only other fish I know I want so far is a flame angel. I haven't talked to very many people about this one, and I don't know too much about them, but it would be a while before I got one so I will do my research, but are there any huge objections to me getting one, or advice for when/if I do? -I'd like a blenny of some sort, possibly a midas...or a lawnmower....they're so funny (once again, however I do not know much about them....) -Doesn't count: I REALLY want a heniochus butterfly....actually 2 or 3....but everyone has already killed my dream of that ever happening in a 75....so those will wait until I have a bigger tank....one day.....haha -A pair of firefish gobies has also always been on my list of wants.. -I'd really like a longnose hawkfish too...I saw one at petco, felt sorry for it, and wanted it... -I'm also considering a wrasse of some sort....perhaps a 4, 6, or 8 line? Or a pair of cleaners? -OH! I almost forgot....when I first started to consider the things I wanted to put in my tank, a clam was not one of them, but the more I see them everywhere, the more I want either a blue or green maxima clam....is that completely out of bounds for me or could I do that eventually? So far this is the list I've put together. I think it's enough of a wish-list for now. So any objections, advice, or suggestions for other fish/random tank inhabitants would be greatly appreciated! thaaaaanks
  16. Wow, the last one is beautiful... no wait.....they all are but the last one is my favorite!
  17. hey, hey, hey! Not showing up to the winter meeting was not our fault. I can't remember why we couldn't but I know we had some good reason for not coming.....haha and not remembering just makes me look bad... I guess you haven't seen any recent pictures of Jason because.... ......he no longer has the 'hippy hair' ! (don't ask about the pic--his dad wanted to take pics of us before we went out for our one-year ) I thought Jason's hair cut was a discussion on this thread somewhere a while ago?? Oh well,
  18. I'm not sure if that was more about me or about Jason....
  19. So at this point, I don't think anyone believes me whenever I say I'm almost done setting everything up and my tank will be up and running soon. But just in case there are still a few of you out there who do believe me... I'm almost done setting everything up and my tank will be up and running soon! (If there's no one left who believes me anymore, both Justin and Jason can vouch for me! ) And thanks to anyone who still reads this 8 month-old, fish-less, water-less thread. You're amazing.
  20. This is slightly just a tiny bit on the scary side.....hehe but only just a little bit...
  21. what is death co charing for said anems? unfortunately the managers don't have an option on what they order they get to pick and choose in certian catagories but are told to order things like anems, and large tangs, and clams, and the like... ~jason the filter freak (sorry wrong log in)
  22. with 6 t5's over a 75 you could have pretty much any coral soft or stony you wanted. You can also if you are sure it's the ballast just use a different brand ballast and save the fixture and bulbs . Welcome to the club and area by the way. Consider becoming a full member it's very well worth it! Hope I've helped you out
  23. ... I have a bit of a complicated reason for taking so long--it's not my fault, I swear! If it were all up to me, it woud be done and I would have my clownfishies from Jason already (I'm getting the ones from the tub )! But, sadly, certain things are way beyond my control and if anyone has a bit of time on their hands and is really interested in knowing what in the world is taking so long, just let me know. Anyway, we've tried testing it a little bit and there have been a few small leaks in the plumbing. A few we fixed, the other few should be getting taken care of on Saturday. I would still feel a lot more comfortable if any one could come take a look at it before we do much else, but if absolutely no one can do it, as it's been said already we'll just have to test it and go from there.
